It’s time for my next ref stat updates. As usual no names, no claims, just the facts and nothing more or less!
This week once again holds lots of fun facts that you can inspire your friends with.
Total fouls called are still up over last year, but down from my last report. The mean total fouls called are now 46.29, compared with 48.17 in total fouls being called as of last report Dec 12th and 42.73 last year.
The average number of calls by the 3 veteran officials who call the most total fouls is down from 52 last report to about 51, while the average of veteran officials who call the least fouls is about 43.75. Just under last report of 44.
The average number of travels called this year is 2.1, Consistent with my last report.
This compares to 1.52 at the end of last year.
Defensive 3 seconds is called on average .56 times per game (.59 last report). The average number ofcalls by the 3 veteran officials who call def 3 the most is down from 1.5x per game my last report to about 1.25. The least, up to .23x per game from 0.18x per game last report.
Offensive fouls are called on average 4.76 times per game, down from last reports 5.16 times per game. Theaverage number of calls by the 3 veteran officials who call offensive fouls the most is 6 per game, down from 7 per game. The least, 3.8 per game, up from 3.6 per game last report.
Last years number was 3.9 per game.
There are .747 techs called per game. That’s up from .724 techs called per game in the last report and down from .762 per game last year.
The top and bottom averages are about 1.45 per game vs .33 per game.
The best news is that there are some refs who know how to control a game without using technicals. Hopefully they will rub off on the trigger happy ones.
Last by not least, is offensive 3 seconds. There are .7 called per game, down from .794 called in the last report and vs .552 last year. The top and bottom averages are about 1.2 per game vs 0.40 game.
The most interesting observation here is that the most veteran officials are at the bottom of the list.
So now you know everything you always wanted to know about officiating statistics but were afraid to ask.
Where would you like these numbers to be? Without any basis for comparison, it is hard to make sense of a lot of these numbers. What do you think should be higher, lower?

Obviously anyone that watches a lot of NBA games knows that what constitutes a foul changes depending on the refs, players, and teams.
Do certain teams benefit more from foul calls than others? Do some refs have a grudge against certain players or teams?

I’m impressed that you collect so many meaningful stats. These seem to be categories that you can look at without bias, as opposed to whether a call is correct or not.
No doubt when you are constructing a team these are very important tools. If, for example, the offensive three second and offensive foul calls are on the rise, a player such as Shaq would lose value.
It’s interesting to see your other statistical breakdown of lineups and plus minus ratios.
I’m looking forward to seeing the Mavs gell and show the fans a few things in the upcoming months. I still rate you a great chance of winnning the title – unlike other years, you’re built for the playoffs. I’m crossing my fingers that your Mavs meet my Heat in the Finals. What a great series it would be!

Mark – ref stats is a good idea to keep tabs on the refs. I am a fan of all pro sports and find NBA refs to be the worst — by far — of the major sports. I know you can’t comment or risk another fine, but I wonder whether you agree with my assessment. The problem might not be the refs, but the type of game the NBA has become. If every bump is called, a foul could be called on every play. This wouldn’t be fun to watch.
Yet, what we get, is some bumps being called, some not, and then some phantom bumps called as fouls. I have witnessed — as confirmed on instant replay — fouls called when there was zero contact b/w the players. Naturally, such fouls usually are called when a superstar has the ball.
So, long story short, these stats are great, but can’t convey the real problems with refs in the NBA.

I can’t say I’m a basketball nut or anything, but I do know the rules. I went to the Mavs/Celtics game at the end of December and I would have to say there was an excessive amount of penalties called and technicals given. I don’t know if this is a trend of this season or not, but it did seem quite strange.

Well, I bet that tech increase is due to the artest sitution Ya think! Well I love numbers I don’t know what it is adn it seems that you must as well. I would when i was a kid take someone’s phone # and subtract the last four digits and what ever # I got thast how i would remeber it and out it with thier face I always thought it was kind of weird, like I was some idiot savant and guess what I probaly am. but any who M YOU have to kEEp big Dirk don’t give that guy up he is going to be the best and is currently the most underrated big man I believe in the league today and he will go down as a legend either for your mavs or not!

These numbers are all well and good, but I’d be much more interested in how often the refs are wrong. How often do they call fouls when they shouldn’t, or not call fouls that they should?
Obviously anyone that watches a lot of NBA games knows that what constitutes a foul changes depending on the refs, players, and teams.
Do certain teams benefit more from foul calls than others? Do some refs have a grudge against certain players or teams?
Doing some analysis should be pretty straight forward, just use a system like the dallas morning news used to find a bunch of schools that have been cheating on their exams.
Get a baseline of the number of fouls called for/against each player/team in the NBA and see if there is any consistency. Sample size may be too small to get good results for a single year, but over the course of two or three this might yield good results.

I’ve read all of your articles since discovering this site several months ago, and this article and the other article about referees led me to one question: Where would you like these numbers to be?
