Obviously anyone that watches a lot of NBA games knows that what constitutes a foul changes depending on the refs, players, and teams.
Do certain teams benefit more from foul calls than others? Do some refs have a grudge against certain players or teams?

I’m curious. I’ve read all of your articles since discovering this site several months ago, and this article and the other article about referees led me to one question: Where would you like these numbers to be? Without any basis for comparison, it is hard to make sense of a lot of these numbers. What do you think should be higher, lower?

These numbers are all well and good, but I’d be much more interested in how often the refs are wrong. How often do they call fouls when they shouldn’t, or not call fouls that they should?

Obviously anyone that watches a lot of NBA games knows that what constitutes a foul changes depending on the refs, players, and teams.

Do certain teams benefit more from foul calls than others? Do some refs have a grudge against certain players or teams?

Doing some analysis should be pretty straight forward, just use a system like the dallas morning news used to find a bunch of schools that have been cheating on their exams.

Get a baseline of the number of fouls called for/against each player/team in the NBA and see if there is any consistency. Sample size may be too small to get good results for a single year, but over the course of two or three this might yield good results.

Well, I bet that tech increase is due to the artest sitution Ya think! Well I love numbers I don’t know what it is adn it seems that you must as well. I would when i was a kid take someone’s phone # and subtract the last four digits and what ever # I got thast how i would remeber it and out it with thier face I always thought it was kind of weird, like I was some idiot savant and guess what I probaly am. but any who M YOU have to kEEp big Dirk don’t give that guy up he is going to be the best and is currently the most underrated big man I believe in the league today and he will go down as a legend either for your mavs or not!

I can’t say I’m a basketball nut or anything, but I do know the rules. I went to the Mavs/Celtics game at the end of December and I would have to say there was an excessive amount of penalties called and technicals given. I don’t know if this is a trend of this season or not, but it did seem quite strange.
