Its only 1 game. We hopefully have more than 100 to play this year. But what a great way to start the season. Who cares if its 4am and we just got to Utah and I know I wont be able to sleep for awhile. I hope the guys can.
We didnt do a whole lot right the first 3.5 quarters. We didnt seem comfortable at all. It wasnt completely suprising. The Suns run and gun style is at a gear higher than anything the Mavs have done over the past 5 years, so its hard to prepare for and takes some time to get used to.
Big time Kudos to Darrell Armstrong (or BC as he prefers… dont ask), for coming in and providing a huge energy and veteran spark. BC told me last year that his goal was at least 2 charges per game, no matter how many minutes he played. He got em last night and they were the turnovers we needed. BC knows how to play. He got the ball to Dirk and JT where they needed it and both came through. DIrk hitting 3-3 3pointers in the 4th. KVH ,now officially known as Keith Van Halen for makingeveryone on the bench ‘Jump’ with that big 3 (Ok, he actually got that name when he was guarding David Lee of the Knicks in preseason :), and JT realizing he couldnt be stopped and could get to the basket whenever he wanted, turned the light bulb on . Then the defense took over.
An insider note. The thing our guys noticed in the first OT, their guys seemed more tired than we were. Maybe because it was the first game. Maybe it was our imagination. Maybe it was making their defense work with longer offensive possessions. Will know for sure when we get our stat. But it gave us some confidence in OT.
What a funnight.
We win. I get to wear my blue sportscoat again for the first time since 1992. You know how everyone has a closet with stuff you pretty much forgot about, but never got around to throwing or giving away ? Well completely by accident I noticed the coat , and decided to have some fun. Now i have to decide whether to wear it again, do it again with another jacket…..or come up with something new.
Only downer of the night was listening to the idiots on TNT after the game. Its not unusual if we win a TNT game for us to turn it on in the locker room and hear what Charles, Kenny and co have to say. They havent gotten any better.
Let me just say this. There is a reason why Kenny and Charles havent gotten head coaching jobs. THere is more to running a team these days then thinking you know what you are talking about. Kenny, if you want to bust on us for switching on the pick and roll, get some stats to back it up. We track conversion rates on everything we do. High pick and roll, elbow pick and roll, whatever, we track it. If its not working Kenny, we adjust. I know that is probably a new concept to you and Charlie B, but thats the NBA of 2006. With all that money you guys make (hey if you are going to talk salaries, lets see how you like it), go out and hire some kids to track what actually happens in a game rather than having TNT bring in kids to go out and get donuts.
Here is a little test. How many deflections did we have last night versus our season average last year. Do you remember what a deflection is guys ? Its a nice indicator of defensive effort.
And rook..I mean Reggie Miller. Remember this rook. Every year TNT brings in the guy who was good, but retired last year, and puts them in that same seat you were sitting in. You may have noticed that they arent there any more. Do something more than just try to be another guy who tries to fit in and trade nonsensical barbs with the boys. Charles has earned the right to be the comedian who has some insights. Kenny wants to be the coach, but wont do the work, so never will be more than a sidekick. Rook, you need to add some value, or in a few weeks we will see someone else sitting in that seat. Maybe Derrick Coleman can come in and give us a Whoop De Damn Do…
But I digress. After listening to some of the idiocy, we just turned it off.

I will bet that the casual basketball fan has no idea about the size on an NBA playbook. I played in college for four years and even we had over 75 set plays.
The culture of And1 has ruined the minds of a lot of young players. Kids nowadays are more enamored with the fancy dribble moves and the monster dunk when at the end of the play, 2 points is 2 points, there are no style points awarded.
It would be nice for the NBA to start promoting how complex and intricate a game of basketball can be. They do it for football, they do it for baseball, it’s time for the third major sport to realize that it’s fans DO want to know how the game is played.

If you want analysis turn to ESPN or NBATV. Those guys (TNT) are on there for the average Joe with some NBA knowledge, and a beer in the hand on the couch during the game. The hardcore fan get their stats from the net etc. I find those guys are half entertaining. You want to slam someone, give Peter Vesey a shot!

WOW! 95% of the posts are suck ups. So what if the Mavs won 1 game down 17 points. They will never win a championship because great basketball is played from instinct. Knowing that a pick and roll 37 inches left of the baseline while standing on your head is only 7% better than if you do it 34 inches from the base line is dumb!
TNT does not have the guys on the show to talk to geeks! They are there to relate to fans. They are there to talk to the 20 somethings and provide alittle entertainment. Stick that in your computer Mark.

I liked your blazer, but I think that you’re taking the antics of the TNT guys too seriously. I think everyone just watches them for entertainment and not for in-depth analysis. It would be nice to have more real analysis, but I do find those guys entertaining although they often seem to be wrong. Also, if these guys are bad what are the ESPN Shootaround guys? Those guys make my ears bleed.

I’ve got a 17 year old who will remember #31 for the rest of his life. The man has done more for the community in Indianapolis than your sorry ass could ever dream to do. Just ask the people at any of the children’s hospitals in the city if Reggie ever did anything that mattered. The thing that was appalling about TNT’s telecast is the new completely awful camera angles and the constant moving of the camera during the game. Man the aerial view’s, the view from the seats about 20 rows up behind some dude eating popcorn, the view from behind the basket with the stat graphic completely over the game while in play. The HD quality is good but the quality of camera work is beyond bad. I thought I was watching the XFL for a few minutes there. Mark u need HDNet to take over for these guys.

Great Game!
Was well worth the 4.30a.m. wake up call here in munich. Sad is, it will be the only live mavs game available for most german bbll fans for at least a month – but at least we can choose between the TNT crew and an enthousiastic german commentator also lacking in insight but making up with continuously explaing basic basketball rules to the german audience…
For this casual german basketball observer one thing in all the NBA teams preparation seems odd:
Why is it that teams travel after these games – have you’re team doctors ever analyzed if going to bed at 1a.m., sleeping normally and flying in the morning would be better than the going-to-bed-at-4a.m.-and-waking-up-dead-tired thing that seems normal between away back to backs?

The game was worth watching it at 4 a.m. (Polish timezone). The way JT exploit Suns inability to guard him was simply run to perfection (at least on this stage of the season). People got crazy on each possesion when Dirk was guarding Steve Nash. And to get the crowd involved Steve needed to make basket after basket on Dirk.
But let’s admit this – Suns screwed up last possesion. They should never go to Nash. He was not open. He was covered by Dirk and I bet that is what you expected. James Jones seemed to have nice touch from outside. Or even Bell. I do not recall who passed on the shot and gave the ball to Nash for off-balance 1-for-100-shot. Anyway Mavs looked for the most of the game quite slow, but fortunately for you Matrix was out-of-touch, Dirk hit a big time 3 almost from the midcourt, JT found his rythm… Nice game to start the season.

First off Mark, even though the jacket was a little loud, it was perfect: Mavs blue and fit your personality(at least what we see courtside) perfectly. I constantly tell my friends that to me you are the epitome of what a sports owner should be. Why would some of these guys(*cough* tom hicks) buy sports teams when they don’t care about the sport or the team?(besides the obvious profit…)
I loved the game last night, my roommate and I watched the whole thing and were quite impressed with the guys’ ability to really push through the last 10 minutes and outplay the Suns.
p.s. I was so excited when you were at SMU a couple weeks ago. I think you should guest lecture more often!

Great win in Phoenix, but it seemed like fatigue caught up with the guys in the Delta Center. As for the TNT crew, I’m guessing they already had their comments ready before the game even started. I think they decided about 5 years ago that the Mav’s needed to work on their defense and just haven’t bothered to update their commentary or watch a game all the way through. I noticed last season that just about every week they usually said the same things about particular teams regardless of what had just happened in the game, and then just worked off of the highlights the TNT guys ran for them at halftime. Once they get tired of Reggie, they’ll just give more time to Magic to stumble through some scripted commentary. And speaking of the donuts, I missed last night’s show but have they figured out a way to hide CB, or is he still exposed out to the right of that desk?

Mark I loved the game last night! What a thrill it was to come back after it looked as if there was going to be a disappointing opener. I had to say I was losing faith in the fourth quarter before the awesome 24-7 run. I pray that Terry’s free throws are not continually that bad….that was pretty frustrating and I KNOW he shoots way better than that at the line. Anyways, keep up the exciting work!

#3 – barkley is funny, why are you so angry?? most of the time they speak the truth and the Spurs will win the Championship again. They are way too deep with Fin and Van Excel (who you should have never got rid of).
(Damp is not going to take the mavs to the promise land, period…he is lazy and will get hurt again this season) Where is the scoring going to come from? If you play JT, Josh, Van Horn, Dirk etc…there is no muscle there. Raja Bell sure looked good didn’t he? Mavs need a player like that. As a journalism student, I am appalled at TNT’s coverage. It is so blatently biased, it is disgusting. It may be acceptable if the analysis of the games were complete or if they cared to back up some of their more EXTREME opinions such as “the Spurs will win the championship, why even play the season?”–but they fail to do this. Not only that, but for the love of God, get some new opinions! Or at least give me reasons. They say the Spurs are going to win the championship based on what merit? They won it last year. Oh, wow! What a great observation, jackasses! How controversial! How origninal!
And if you are marketing the game so that people actually want to watch it, how about you don’t say that the whole season might as well not be played because the Spurs are going to win the championship; hands-down, no questions asked. Why belittle your analysis of the other 29 teams in the league just because you think you’ve got all the answers? They literally said, it doesn’t matter about other teams, Spurs got it. How ignorant is that? And Kenny is an idiot. At least Barkley is funny.
All I know is Mark Followill and Bob Ortegal are great people and I will chose them over those morons any day.
Final Note: Dirk Nowitzki clearly waiving Cheryl Miller off after raising his arms in glory and walking back to the locker room; classic! Good call, Dirk!

I never claimed that Kenny Smith had a high basketball intelligence quotient. I merely stated that his credentials indicate that he has run NBA offenses and defenses, and from the point guard position at that. The salient point of my argument was that Mr. Cuban, from the vantage of an owner and wielding “deflection statistics,” is not inherently more credible than the person he is criticizing nor are the things that he states are lacking in the TNT broadcast necessarily what provides that credibility. Personally, I like the TNT show for the entertainment value, not the basketball knowledge it does or doesn’t provide. I certainly agree that Kenny Smith won’t be considered for many coaching positions. Given the qualifications, neither would Mr. Cuban.
As for the use of “sycophant,” my comment’s other implicit point was that Mr. Cuban has likely adopted things he hears in the locker room or in conversations with his employees and tries to pass it off as if he has innate basketball credibility, inclusive of his post here and previous comments on record that endeavor to show the basketball fans and his paying customers that he has a certain level of exceptional understanding and expertise in the sport. While I suppose the general public and his paying customers aren’t his superiors–therefore making “sycophant” less-than-traditional in my usage–it could be argued that Mr. Cuban’s comments here are self-serviant in that they draw attention to himself and, by extension, his team–which in turn creates a profit for himself. My apologies to you and your rigid grammar and usage expectations if I was too liberal in my application of the term.

I agree with you that Kenny’s a tool who’s just there to provide surface commentary for the everyday joe to understand while Charles is there for comic relief. I know they’re running off old stereotypes of your team, which I have to admit, was very much deserved under the old Nellie regime, so now it’s up to AJ to fix your rep. Bulls fan here, watched the game last night. Great effort, I myself hate watching NBA anaylsts, kenny and chuck are bad, not nearly as bad as Tim Legler. None of those guys in the TNT studio will ever do a good job. You can’t have 3 homeboys in there analyze stuff. It turns to street very fast. Mr. Cuban, Kenny Smith has two championship rings. This does not make him an astute observer or potential coaching candidate. But neither do the sort of statistics and independent business success that you possess, the traits you possess that have allowed you to be involved in this game. Your ownership of the Mavericks gives you the opportunity to voice your opinions, but neither your opinions nor your role in the sport (which is as an owner) seems to indicate anything other than a sycophantic basketball acumen borrowed from second hand locker room jargon and the need to feel like one of the guys. Mr. Smith understood basketball–and the pick and roll–well enough to be a starter on back to back championship teams. Perhaps is commentary is lacking in depth, but the depth of statistics and criticism from an owner who hasn’t built a champion is no more credible.

I had a substantial financial interest in the Mavs last evening (-2). The first three 1/2 quarters were just awful…then the fun started! Just a great comeback. I am not surprised that some of your players felt that the Suns were a little tired…I had the sense throughout the fourth quarter that the Mavs were just one run from taking over the game; the Suns seemed to be hanging on, which may be strange to say about a team that had built a 17 point lead…which is why the first 6 minutes of the quarter were just so maddening. Charles and Kenny torched you guys at the half, too. CB said that you guys can’t guard anybody. Oh well, I cashed in, and at some point this year will come back for more in the right spot (tonight is not the right spot).

Your passion for the team never ceases to amaze Mark. The bright blue jacket’s gotta go, however. I think the Mavs have some nice young talent in Howard, Harris, and Daniels, so giving them as much time as possible is the #1 priority. The old guys (Dampier, Christie, etc.) are garbage… wasted money. I still think the Mavs aren’t going anywhare in the playoffs. It’s painfully obvious. They’ll have a decent regular season and get ousted in the first round. You love to discredit the TNT guys, but have they ever been wrong? Year after year they predict a good regular season and a quick playoff oust, and year after year they’re right. Facts are facts. Package some of your scrubs and a young stud and get an Igoudala type player in return to complement Dirk.

Good to see you talking about basketball again. I agree 100% with Mark’s assessment of the TNT’s “analysis.” I usually tune into game about 10 minutes after the television start time because I can’t stand the pregame commentary. It has become all style & no substance. They don’t really add anything worthwhile to listen to. You could almost program a dummy to say it.
“The (insert losing team here) really didn’t come out to play today. In the second half they’re going to have to match (insert the winning team here)’s intesity. (Best player on the losing team) really needs to get his team going in the locker room if he wants to be a leader in this league.”
They’ve really dumbed it down to the lowest common denominator.

Mark, The guys on TNT are rediculous. I have heard the same garbage for over 3 years about how they think the Mavs aren’t going to win. Charles needs to quit his commentary or pay us to listen to him stutter all night. For Reggie, he’s a great player and has always been one of the best competitors in the NBA. With that said, he has no commentary skills what so ever and his insight into the game was far from stellar. TNT’s production of the NBA has always been awful and my expectations of their show is next to watching a High School news broadcast.
Anyways, When are you going to buy the Chicago Cubs??? Please save us from our misery of horrible ownership/managment. If you turned them around you would be known as the SPORTS GOD!

I really thought Sir Charles to be hilarious and one heck of a player but what i can’t take is his comment with his partner kenny smith… i think they should analyze more on what the mavs do on paper rather than what they on the game. read 82games.com Sir Charles! you’re one of my idols but it’s a shame that you doubt the plan and preparation of the Mavs every game. i think the owner really take it by heart the comments about the mavs being soft or weak in defense. You have stat guys that track deflections and such??? I know that stats are fun to look at, I love box scores. Let those guys keep stats. Youmake it sounds like whatever Rocky movie that was with Dolph Lundgren, he had all the technology and such, and got beat by another that had great work ethic and heart. The Spurs are your Rocky, keep a team together with the right pieces for longer than 2 yrs. (I still can’t believe the Van Exel deal) and you may just have a team that can develop a heart. I love the Lakers, when they first won with Kobe and Shaq, they did it because they had played together for a while. When they created the “Fantastic Four” they proved that moves don’t = champions.

Your actions and comments with regards to Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith, are, without a doubt, empty. A team owner can almost never really have an edge on those that have lived on the court, at least not in terms of basketball sense.
It may make sense to the spectators to switch up on the pick-and-roll; however, it is another case entirely if you’re the less mobile big-man being tossed up and faked out by the smaller guard. Similarly, the smaller guard on defense will undoubtedly have trouble defending the larger, precise and methodical big-man running the other end of the pick and roll.
However, I am not here to discuss the criticisms that the TNT analysts made of your team (as you seem to be doing a rather slanted and incorrigible job of it yourself); rather, I am here to ask you to refrain from taking this any further than you have already. The steps you took to “clear up” the situation (such as addressing the fact that you called Charles Barkley an idiot) have been intelligent, but are definitely not sufficient. They wont let you get off that easy. Let’s break down what you did, shall we? You insulted their place of work (with a frighteningly caustic air, I might add), you insulted them directly and personally (citing their ‘supposed’ inability to coach teams), and you essentially revealed yourself as a biased, narrowminded franchise owner that has been blessed with riches and an enthusiasm for one of the best games on the planet, and almost none of the knowledge regularly associated with enthusiasts such as yourself.
After reading your comments for a fourth time, I still cannot see how Barkley and Smith can interpret your comments in a different manner – Kenny was dead on in saying that you, yourself, addressed the TNT analysis staff. Your reaction was childish and unnecessary; so they said your defense sucks. I’ll say it right now: Mavs defense is trash. What are you going to do, cry about it on your blog? I’d hate to think that you’d put yourself on a level as low as that of a middle school girl. Think about it for a second: Kenny and Charles said our defense was subpar. Here’s an idea, lets insult them personally on the internet, and get worked up over criticism that is not relevant to my part in the Mavericks franchise anyways!

Everyone knows that Barkley and Smith dont really know what they are talking about and basically just go off of the general opinion of the public and the general predictions of the public and the media. Charles is fun to listen to sometimes but he is an idiot. He doesnt even know who some players play for, when they asked him the other night. They actually do that segment regularly and he always does bad at it. I love the way you stand up for the team Mark and I hope you dont listen to them when they bash the team. I love the team and lets see how this thing works out. I must say though that I heard yall turned down a deal for Paul Pierce, which I think is a deal that you need to make if its possible. I wrote to TNT and asked them what the hell they were thinking when they got Barkley in there…hes crass, rude, not funny…and talks basketball, but has nothing to back it up. Just because you played the game doesn’t mean you have insight into other teams or games. I wondered how long he sits up at night thinking about what to say the next day? Then I think, wait…hes prob up eating, not thinking…and we all know he can’t do both…There is a reason you didn’t get your ring chuck…and you can’t blame anyone other than yourself for that…and it’s nothing TNT will prove to the rest of the world for you. You are a lazy show boat and likes attention, thats something in childhood you missed. That cost you a ring. You will do or say anything to feel like you fit in and it will never fill the void you never fofilled. It’s time to let it go. Just cause you blocked shots and slamed the ball and passed behind your back once in while and got lucky, doesn’t make you a professional analyst of the game. TNT did you a favor, don’t repay them by talking, just shake your head and smile, thats the best thing you could do for TNT and the NBA!

I’ve got to talk about Reggie. He doesn’t have a ring. He doesn’t have an MVP. But he -is- one of the greatest NBA players of all time. Any serious NBA fan 20 years from now who doesn’t know who he is should seriously consider another hobby.

Well,well,well: I do not claim to have a great deal of knowldge of the game nor the statistics in my head to know who is right or wrong or even if there is one. I do know I’d rather see Charles and Kenny any day before I would like to see the antics of Markie. Charles and Kenny as well as TNT are their for our enjoyment and you for what I don’t know. Dallie is ok well pertty good but I feel will never be the best in the NBA or at least make it to the championship (not gonna happen). Just the comment of a NBA fan.

All I needed to know about the Mavs I learned last year against the Rockets in the playoffs. About a minute and a half left, 2 or 3 point game, shot clock at about 10. Dirk gets a switch, gets the ball with his back to the hoop about 12 feet away posting on JON BARRY. He holds it for 3 seconds, then kicks it out and they turn it over. This is your “superstar”. That sequence pretty much sums up the Dallas Mavericks. And secondly Cuban, if you wouldnt kill for Reggie Miller on this Mavs team, you know less about basketball than I thought

You should be internet savvy and marketing savvy enough to know that people want entertainment from their basketball television personalities. These guys being former successful NBA players makes their opinions worth hearing to most NBA enthusiasts. People don’t want to watch statisticians drone on, that’s what they use the internet for. People definitely don’t want to hear about some crybaby owner whine about everything and act like a spoiled brat all of the time.

Mark Cuban’s response showed how childish he is. Kenny and Charles are analysts. They are supopsed to tell you what a team is doing right/wrong. And for Mark to respond by addressing Kenny and Charles trying to coach was just besides the point. Rather than whinning over their statements and addressing unrelated issues, why not take their advice? They are telling you what’s wrong with your team and all of a sudden you take it personal. And then you turn around, diss them and say “Its not personal, its just business advice.” And talking about Reggie Miller… that was just crossing waaaay over the line. Who on your weak Maverick’s team has as much heart as Reggie, the best clutch shooter in the game? Definitely not Dirk (who by the way I do not know how he got on the Harlem Globetrotters)If you had any basketball sense, maybe you would not have let Van Exel go after proving he had the most guts in the playoffs 3 years ago. Maybe you would not have let Nash go to lead another team to the Western Conf Finals and become league MVP. Charles was right. Your team plays well during the season and takes a vacation in the playoffs. The toughest guy out there is J. Terry, but even his toughness is overshadowed by the overall team being a bunch of cupcakes. And it seems like that runs all the way up to ownership with the way you responded.

Mark, I don’t think you should post a blog at 4am in the morning anymore. The rambling complaints of TNT’s studio crew was like listening to Bill Walton recite the alphabet. You know he’s going to get some letters wrong and make an ass of himself.
There’s probably no TV hoops personality who can equally entertain and inform at a high level except for perhaps Greg Anthony. Taking pot shots at studio “analysts” because they correctly stated that you have a regular season team is pointless. Your team has to be more than just entertaining. They need to win it all to change the minds of those who believe that your team will be nothing more but a practice squad for the eventual champs.
Rumour has it that Old School Stern will soon retire his command of commissioner. Have you thought of applying for the position?

All you Dallas Mavs’ Fans are crazy!!! Let’s be real, the TNT crew knows what they are talking about. With all their joking aside, they know what they’re talking about. Okay, the guys on ESPN don’t know crap except Tim Legler. Greg A. is a wannabe analyst. Steven A. just tells it like it is (He’s decent sometimes!) Out of all the reporters and analysts of the NBA, the TNT crew is the most fun! The TNT crew makes basketball fun. So, who cares if they don’t pay attention to stats? You can go on the internet for that. I don’t need an ex-NBA player to tell me stats. I want to hear about the game through their eyes. And yes, basketball was not the same when Kenny and Charles played, but it’s still about the same fundamentals. That is something that will never change. For Cuban to make fun of those dudes, what does that say about the owner. If you had respect for these guys, maybe you should pay a little bit more attention to what they are saying and take their advice. I want to know why would you let Fin go?? You need to check your boy, Dirk, he disappeared in the playoffs last year. He wanted to get on everyone else, but was a no show himself. Charles is right. Dallas Mavs are a bunch of cupcakes! Bottom line dirk wont get the same calls, because of his background (yes as stupid as that might sound), he is an euro player, a totally different player than Duncan or Garnett, thats why he will never get the same calls as those other dudes. Everybody says that the mavs are soft mainly because of dirk and his style of play (7-ft SG/SF/PF/C), he doesnt post up like duncan and garnett do, thats why he doesnt get the respect he should be getting.
Last time I checked, Jason Terry, Josh Howard, Stack/Daniels, and Dampier and Diop were all black dudes and they still dont get any calls like they should. Its not an excuse, but its a fact, the mavs still have that reputation when we had the most foregin/white players in our team, but guess what, thats not the case anymore. We only have 1 white player that is a starter, and we still dont get any respect. Thats lame.
Just because a team doesnt play Defense like the Pistons/Pacers, w/e, it doesnt mean they are soft, some other teams dont have an offense as potent as the mavs had, and they are not being called soft right ?, its all about respect, which the mavs arent getting any

As to the Mavs opener — exciting. My Lakers have started off nicely, and given their penchant for allowing a LOT of scoring, the Mav/Laker matchups should be a blast to watch.

Love to read your blog, but your assessment of your teams strategy of switching on the pick-n-roll is off base.
The most success that I’ve ever seen a team have guarding the pick-n-roll was the Chicago Bulls strategy of crowding and double teaming the small John Stockton off of the screen. Bulls used oversized athletic perimeter players like Jordan, Harper, and Pippen to block Stockton’s court vision.
The Mavs have oversized, athletic perimeter players that can be used on Nash, and the ability to crowd and trap him off the screen with your athletic forwards. But simply switching the screen and roll is ineffective. Quick/Smart point guards like Nash, Rafer Alston, Deron Williams are smart enough and skilled enough to recognize that they’re being guarded one on one by a forward, and they’ll abuse the mismatch 100% of the time.
With the athleticism of your players, it shouldn’t be necessary to switch 100% of the screens. A quick show of the forward to slow Nash down and give Terry or Armstrong a chance to recover would be preferrable to constant switching.
Even better would be to adopt the Phil Jackson Bulls’ strategy of using oversized, athletic perimeter players like Marquis Daniels or Josh Howard on Nash-esque players to limit the PG’s vision and angles on pick-n-rolls.

Next, you traded Antawn Jamison, a player who blended in beautifully, for Jerry “black hole” Stackhouse. You let Steve Nash go, who uh…..went on to win the MVP. Notice a pattern? Like most millionaires with over-blown ego’s, you think you know more than you actually do. If you were as half as intelligent as Kenny and Charles, you might actually be the only team left in the West who could compete with the Spurs. I mean seriously, the Lakers and Kings have fallen off the map, and all you had to do was have a little patience and you might have won a championship by now! Finley and Van Exel have been the only players with spine in Dallas since you’ve been there. Van Exel is Clutch and Finley is still better than any 1-3 on your team. Charles and Kenny don’t have intelligent basketball minds, but neither does Mr. Cuban (judging from his personnel movements; coaching and otherwise) Bottom line is people don’t really watch Inside the NBA for the in depth analysis, they watch it because it makes them laugh and they get to see highlights. It’s more entertaining then, I don’t know, let’s say The Benefactor.
And as stupid as Charles is he still got it right when he said the Mavs are a great regular season team, but come playoff time they will not succeed. Can anyone refute this?
Mark can b*tch about their comments all he wants (it’s his blog), but ultimately, at the end of the day, their final analysis of his team is accurate. The Mavs won’t make it to the Finals and they’d be extremely lucky if they even make it to the Western Conference finals. Do people actually believe they are a championship caliber team?

Honestly, do you think a soft team that doesn’t play defense has a snowball’s chance against a team like the Spurs?
well see the mavericks were never soft its just that there star player Nowistki is white and white players dont get calls. IF a white player decides to play physical he will foul out in about 4 minutes.
If a black player decides to play physical they will call him “the glove”

I am surprised at you, Kenny and Charles have been pointing in season in and season out that stats don’t mean anything. Basketball is simple the only thing you need to do is value each possession.
Perhaps they talk nonsense sometimes, but that’s exactly what basketball is about you can be 40 and still act like a kid in front of millions. Perhaps you are loosing focus of what you enjoy about the game.
Try this for one time, throw away most of the stats (I am not saying all of them) and simplify things for people, Basketball is about human reactions to unexpected events. You as a computer person should know that that is very hard to model.
Just have your players, play the game and provide effort, after that throw in some stats.
Yes, your team had many deflections on that game, but that doesn’t mean anything, it could mean that the Suns played poorly, or they put an effort at the end of the game. If that’s the case why they had to come from 17.
Also when did those deflection happened?/ Under what circumstances?
Perhaps you should listen more and just get what you can use. You can always learn something every day from anybody including idiots.

Mark, what are you talking about? Are you seriously calling out Charles Barkley. Dude just because you own an NBA team doesn’t mean you know anything about the game. It just means you have alot of money, and perhaps you are a fan OF the game. The fact of the matter is in that game your guys weren’t coming off picks. Also fact of the matter is, Dallas does not have a team that is able to win a championship. To quote Charles and Kenny Dallas has a “regular season team.” So like Always Dirk will lead ya’ll to the play-offs, and then ya’ll will be out in two or three rounds. But hey atleast ya’ll make it fun for the fans to watch. I mean I love the team you have put together, they are exciting and fast pase. Dirk is definetly one of the best players in the NBA. I also have no problem at all admiting that you aren’t gonna win a championship anytime soon.

Dear owner of west finals loser in 2003 I think you should be quiet about kenny and chuck. They know more about hoops than u will ever. Tracking stats is cute but no team in the NBA except 4 maybe sacremento says We are going to have 2 worry about how tough this team is. To some of the people leaving follow up comments: Why all the Reggie bashing?
To answer the question of whether a 20 year old in the year 2025 will know who Reggie was? Possibly not, but only if he has never visited the hall of fame.
But you guys have fun bashing #31. No the Pacers never won any championships, but they were an elite team during much or Reggie’s tenure. The best Pacer team in that era, took the Bulls to the brink. A couple years later post MJ, they ran into Shaq and Kobe playing as well as they ever played (at least together). Before those teams 98 & 2000, the Pacers were an overachieving team beating better teams in the playoffs and barely missing a couple of Conference Final upsets.
99 was the only real disappointing playoff run in all of Reggie’s years.
I’m happy to see Reggie doing the TV work and perhaps his game commentary will be more up to the standards that Mr. Cuban is looking for.

I think ratings would go way up if ALL the analysis (including in game) were a little more cerebral. The cliches and generalizations are fine for folks who are new to basketball but most basketball fans know a little about the game but wouldn’t mind learning more.
It’s like when I watch football…I know the basics but never played myself and thus am fascinated by all the technical analysis that goes on during the game. Basketball is a little fast paced for that but you could certainly do a quick analysis coming out of a timeout and certainly during halftime.
Listening to Kenny Smith is brutal. The guy talks and talks but doesn’t say anything interesting. Charles is hilarious so cut him some slack Cuban. Greg Anthony on ESPN will give some good insight once in a while.
Otherwise, everyone just throws out cliches. I remember listening to George Raveling commentating on some Cal Berkeley games while I was in college. He once said, “If we had more men like Shareef Saddam-Raheer during Vietnam we would have won the war.” He pronounced Shareef’s name at least 10 different ways during the game. Every crappy broadcaster is still miles above George “Rambling.” Count your blessing Cuban that you didn’t hire that guy.
