I Own Phil Jackson

Not literally of course. That thrill belongs to the smartest businesswoman in professional sports, Jeannie Buss. Figuratively however,thecoach formerly known as the Zen Mastermust now be considered my bucket boy.

This wasnt an acquisition I proactively pursued.Therewasnt an official competition that I won, thereby confirming my dominance of his psyche. Instead Phil has initiated an ongoing commentary about me that started in his previous stint with the Lakers and was reinstated this year with his return, that proves that I own the guy.

For whatever reason, I have gotten to Phil so completely and thoroughly that every time he comes to Dallas he has to offer unsolicited comments about me to the media. I wonder if he dreams about me the nights he spends here in Dallas. Ok, I dont wonder. Im curious about it.

How can the NBA coach with so many championship rings find me so intimidating ? I really dont know, but he said as muchin December when hecalled me an “intimidating force” to the LA Times

“consider a place like Dallas, where the owner runs around, pumps up the volume, intimidates the referees and … has announcers as hired cheerleaders, which is an intimidating force.”

Then of course last night he again took the initiative to comment to the media about how I am such a presence in the NBA, thati turn the officialsinto “nervous nellies”. Implying that I can have more influence on the outcome of a game than his coaching skills. I wish. But if Phil wants to think so. Im fine with that. Thats what happens when you own someone, they cant get you out of their head, and they dont often think , speak or act rationally.

I guess Phil was so overwhelmed that it caused himto take back to back delay of game penalties and the technical foul that comes with it, rather than send his team out to the court at the conclusion of a timeout in the 4th quarter.

Of course the officials werent intimidated. At least no more than the other officials who have given Kobe technical fouls to the tune of a league leading 11. Maybe, instead of being so concerned with MarkCuban, Phil should be worried about the new rule in place that causes a player to be suspended a gameafter he gets his 16th technical foul of the season. And if I remember correctly, every technical after 16 results in a 1 game suspension as well. Cant wait to hear what he has to say when that happens….

Of course I dont truly believe that I own Phil. This is all tongue in cheek, but that wont prevent me from walking up to him and saying “Boo” to see if he jumps, just to find out for sure 🙂

  2. The Lakers have gotten all kinds of great NBA treatment for years. Kobe gets more star treatment than any other player in the NBA it seems like and finally when he gets a technical, Laker fans every where act like the sky is falling. Phil Jackson knows his team got dominated by the Mavs, he is just looking for excuses.

  3. Well Keith, I think they will be focusing on the game come playoff time, assuming the Lakers are still lucky enough to be in playoff contention. Phil essentially said the same thing after they came into the AAC and won the game earlier this season and this time he came in and lost. The Mavs didn’t seem to be preoccupied with thinking about what Phil was thinking then. Add to the fact all the local media’s crying about a lack of respect and the Mavs 11 game win streak they had on the line and that makes the win mighty impressive in my humble opinion. Avery is making a world of a difference but it doesn’t matter anyways, the Lakers are garbage and even if the Mavs didn’t have their minds in the right place come playoff time they would send LA packing in 5 games tops.

    The time Mark spends “crying” about refs is not wasted. Officials need to be reviewed and held accountable just as in every other profession in America. He’s trying to make the game better and after seeing the Super Bowl and recent Duke games I would say officiating is a rather important aspect of sports. Whats so wrong with insisting that it be accurate and fair?

  8. Mark.. honestly I dont get you sometimes. Why do you have to argue back with everything someone says on this blog. Yes, Your team isnt perfect(no ones is). Yes, you seem like a very outgoing guy and you do like to argue with the refs on some calls. Dont deny it, thirs tapes all around that have you yelling at them pretty dang close. I just dont get why you dont go out on the TV-Media or Face to Face to speak you mind about issues that coaches and people say. You hide behind this blog… and honestly your rep with the fans around the league when they see you write back on this blog is getting worse.   11. Your freelance interpretation of “owning” someone makes me think he owns you. The Zen Master plays all kinds of games to get into the head of an opponent. He knew the Lakers had lost that game and his new objective was to put pressure and attention back onto the Mavs and officiating crew. Certainly a warranted strategy if you’re potentially looking at your future first round opponent. Assuming the Mavs don’t choke themselves right out of contention for the Western Conference’s 1st overall playoff seed. Again, will the Mavs and officiating crew be concentrating of the game next time around or the comments of one Phil Jackson?

  16. When Phil isn’t surrounded by an all-star supporting cast to place a championship in his lap, he becomes a petulant child. Hopefully this season will put to rest the “How good is Phil?” debate. He has the most talented player in the NBA and will be lucky to make the playoffs. If I were him I’d be more concerned with getting my team above .500 and less concerned with the officials.

    If you know anything about Phil Jackson, it’s a tactical comment so the referees & NBA remember that next time we play.   22. I guess the zen master isn’t a master with an avg. team. He looks a lot like Pat Riley. Phil is learning, as Riley did, with an avg team you are always on the wrong side of the ticky tack foul. Maybe if Kobe had not tried to show up the refs in the 1st quarter by running his mouth after his “T” you wouldn’t have seen as many techs on the rest of the team. They could have and maybe should have tossed Kobe for his roid rage antics, but the officials chose to show Phil and Kobe they are in control by teeing up everybody else. Keep up the roid rage Kobe! It looks good on avg Phil.

    I mean, how many times this season has Kobe actually shot less free throws in a game than Laker opponents? I guess when you’re so used to refs giving Kobe star treatment, it’ll come as a shock when he actually gets treated the same by the refs as everyone else out on the court.

  27. i am a lifelong pistons fan, so for nearly 20 years i’ve hated the bulls and lakers with a passion. i am the last one who would ever defend phil jackson, but mark cuban is a joke. i’ve never seen an exec struggle so much with not being an athlete. the truth is he doesn’t matter at all once you get past his bank account. maybe phil will eventually just sell him a ring in hopes of shutting him up forever. cuban’s comments seem like such an obvious attempt to elevate himself since he’s unable to achieve as an owner even 10% of what phil has accomplised in the league. one last thing, despite what happened earlier in the season i would pray that the pistons would get dallas in the finals, as they are still soft and will always be soft. bottom line is dirk’s a puss and mark’s a poser.

    There is no way you can look at the tapes of last nite’s game and say honestly that those were good calls. Had the shoe been on the other foot your head probably would have exploded, and you’d be looking at a $1 million fine for the diatribe you would have immediately gone on.

Has your team ever beaten a Phil Jackson team in the playoffs? NO. Has your team won an NBA championship in any of the years Phil Jackson has coached in the NBA? NO. Take a look at your team’s record in LA up until last season, now that’s ownership.

    At the end of the day you’re nothing more than an annoying little girl, regardless of your team’s mid season success you’ll just be rolled in the playoffs this year just like every year. Enjoy your page 6 status.

  32. If your assertion is true, then why didn’t Phil Jackson leave Kobe Bryant in the game on 12/20/05, after he scored 62 points in three quarters?

    Phil’s record against the Mavericks during his tenure as the head coach of the Lakers is 17-6 (including this season’s 2-1 record). That hardly constitutes any evidence of you owning Phil. The only history of dominance is by teams coached by Phil Jackson over teams owned by Mark Cuban.

    Following Phil’s track record of making comments to the media preceding and following important games simply shows that Jackson uses the media to send messages he wants to be heard. Jackson’s indirect reference to the Lakers’ future interest in Toronto Raptor forward Chris Bosh earlier this season is a recent example, as were his comments about you. The difference is that Phil Jackson is perceived as sly in his comments while your response seems overly personal and heavy-handed.

    “I Own Phil Jackson” was an entertaining, if not slightly over-the-top, read. Godspeed.

(I didn’t see Mark that night, was he negotiating his contract with Kleenex?)…the Lakers are struggling right now, hovering around .500, but a respected ball club and gauranteed to make big changes in the near future (which will essentially bring another CHAMPIONSHIP to LOS ANGELES, before DALLAS gets theirs!)

  38. Short memory! Jackson did this kind of thing all the time when he was with the Bulls. Back then he was very effective at pissing off the other team and getting the refs to call illegal defense.

    He’s got 9 rings and *you* own *him*?

    And to Dan Mullen – other coaches had Jordan/Pippen and Shaq/Jobe and still have no rings to show for it. He also got the Bulls within a hairs breadth of the Eastern Conference finals *without* Jordan if not for a totally bogus call by the refs in Game 6 against the Knicks (his mind tricks didn’t work that time ;).

Phil Jackson professionally makes the comment about the referees being intimidated by Cuban because he cries to the refs after every game, and Cuban proceeds to act like a 5 year old and say he “owns” Phil. I don’t understand Cuban, he just went into a tailspin because someone finally called him out about crying to the refs after every game. Also, I don’t think he has done his research accurately, as he said Kobe has a league leading 11 technical fouls when Rasheed Wallace has 12. Nice work Cuban, keep up the crying you big baby

I wonder how he feels the “soft” Mavs have a team that actually plays with fundamentals and doesn’t rely on one guy to score 50+ points in a game to win.

And from all the comments and interviews you’ve given through the years, I realized you’re just like the fan who threw the beer at Artest — you think you own this game and are entitled to behave the way you do.     I’m not really sure how much influence Mark really does have in the NBA, what I DO know is that he is a very smart owner and, as I see it, has a lot of integrity.

    First, I am a longtime Laker fan, but more importantly, I am a fan of the NBA. I respect you and what you have done for the Mav’s and the NBA as a whole. It’s a different game now and you have been an active part of that change.

    I will say that Phil is not totally off key. You are after all THE single most visible owner besides perhaps the Maloof’s. You all attend your games, sit close to the court and are very vocal. I think rather than harp on your potential influence over the refs inside your own house (how can I even begin to figure out the relevance or vailidity of that) I think the larger subject at hand is the quaility of the officiating in the game itself.

    You have been an ardent critic of the job the folks in b/w do, I too am critical. I have seen way too many games in the league grossly altered by totally missed calls.

    So, rather than stick by Phil, or you, or any other coach or owner, I will simply say that I think we need another ref on the court besides the 3 we currently have. If there were another set of eyes on the game, perhaps positioned differently (above the court? who knows….) we might see more of the calls made correctly with better consistency, and, more democratically. Perhaps.

    I think the refs have a tough job (as they do in football), I respect their gig. It’s not easy. But I do think if we’re going to make all of these changes to the game from the rules to the telecast, let’s also change the way the games get called.

If i remember correctly, Kobe torched Dallas for 62 points in only 3 quarters. I guess he was having an off night. You also have that squirt you call a coach Avery Johnson. LOL, i haven’t seen anything so funny in my life. I guess in ten years Cuban will hire Earl Boykins to be his coach.   54. To review: Mark Cuban owns the Dallas Mavericks — who have zero (0) NBA championships.
    You do not own Phil Jackson — who has nine (9) NBA championships.
    The the gentlemen who said talking about championships is “weak.” No, that is not weak, it is in fact the entire reason for playing the NBA season.
    And as far as Laker fans living in the past, perhaps you are confused because the Lakers HAVE history, or at least one worth remembering. But, let’s live in the present. The Dallas Mavericks and the Lakers have the same chance of winning the title this year: a very slim one.
    The Dallas Mavericks and the Lakers prospects for future titles are definitely not equal. The Lakers will be champions again while Dallas will continue to provide many fond regular season memories and even fonder memories of Dirk choking in the playoffs and blaming his teammates for it.
    And in regards to the many Jeannie Buss references here: Yes, Phil is tapping his boss’s daughter, that would be the daughter who posed in Playboy. And that is a bad thing because…? God, you Texans are stiff.

  60. Now Phil is sounding a bit like Mike Holgrem in Seattle. Phil is trying to use his “zen master” technique to try to influence the officials “if” the Lakers make the playoffs. I would guess if they do make the playoffs, they would be playing the #1 seed which could be the Mavericks. Mike and Mike from ESPN radio said it best this morning. Phil is trying to influence the referees for future games against the Mavs and he should be fined more than $25,000 since he makes over 10 million!

Are you willing to say you would never hire a man who has won 6 NBA championships and has to potential to turn Dirk Nowitizki into one of the greatest 4’s of all time? I dare you to call him a bucket boy to his face next time you see him and we’ll see where you end up physically and popularity wise. You think this helps your image? You’re a businessman, think again. Plus get off the whole Kobe 11 techs thing. You’re lucky you’re not a player, your 12- year old antics would give ‘Sheed a run for his money.
