We all want our dream job, or to run our own companies. In reality its a lot easier said then done. In reality we need a job that pays the bills and cant wait out the search for the perfect situation. Which leads to the question, what kind of job should you settle for when you cant or dont have the job you want ?
Not everyones situation is going to be the same, but for the recent graduate, the answer is pretty straightforward, at least I thought it was when I graduated. You continue your education.
Go back to school ? No. Get your MBA ? No.
For most recent college grads, you just spent the last 4 or so years paying tuition to get an education. Now that you have graduated, its your chance to get paid to learn.
When I graduated from Indiana, I certainly didnt dream of working for a bank. I wanted a job where I could learn more about computers. So I took a job working for Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh. Ihelped on systems conversions. Taking old manual systems atsmall banks and helping them convert to automated systems.I wasnt that good at it. The job was fun for the first couple months because I worked with a lot of fun people. But as the months wore on, I liked it less and less, and I had to tell myself more and more,exactly why I was there.I was getting paid to learn about how computers work, how big companies work, how middle managers work and that wasa whole lotbetter than paying tuition to get a business education.
Ilasted all of 9 months at that job. I lasted about 8 months at my next job,working for a company called Tronics 2000. At Tronics 2000, our mission was to try franchise the TV repair industry. Thecompany was supposed to be entrepreneurial. It was supposed to be looking at expanding intofranchsing into the computer repair business.(They had me write an analysis of the opportunity in myoff time). As it turns out, it basically was none of the above. But I got paid my 18k per year and I learned a whole lot.
The company sold a total1 franchises. That I sold . Again, I was far from a great employee. I spent too much time having fun at the expense of doing my job to the best of my ability. Going to work hungover once a week isnt a good career move. So in some respects I cheated them. No excuses on my part.
The job was also frustrating. Calling and calling and calling on TV repair shops trying to explain the value of franchising wasnt an easy cold call. But l learned how to cold call.I learned not to be afraid of picking up a Yellow Pages book andmaking calls.
I alsogo totalk to an old industry veteranLarryMenaugh. Larrywrote the very first service contracts in the electronics industry. He was a wise old vet. Wedidnt talk much about the company or the industry, but after meetings we would sit in, we would talk about how to get the job done. He would give me honest critiques of things I was doing, and coming from Larry, Iknew they were right. I wish I could go back and thank him.
I lasted in that job about 9 months as well, and from there took off to Dallas, Tx in search of fun, sun, money and women.
I was 23. I hadno money. The 77 FIAT i was driving drank oil faster than I could drink beer and had a huge hole in the floor. I was going to stay on the floor of some friends who had moved from IU to a huge apartment complex in Dallas.
I had no idea what the future would bring, but I knew I had taken a few classes in real world business and got paid for it instead of paying tuition and I had every intention of continuing to do the same thing until things worked out.

Great advice! Get out there and work. You see, there is instruction (school) and then there is experience (work). You need both to gain knowledge (power). All that great schooling wont stick unless theres some application of said instruction to cling to. Imagine card counting practice without a trip to Vegas? Worthless! Keep that in mind those of you wanting to spend a year traveling JanSport style after graduation. Dont do it! Find a job with an international company and visit Amsterdam on your expense account. Then, later in life if you find yourself in transition (youve been downsized due to company overspending on your salary) get your ass to the library and start soaking up all that experience with some good instruction. I suggest starting with Fooled By Randomness. Good luck!

I am not sure why you posted that but it is nice to know you have lived like alot of other people. I myself have been homeless. I walked the streets doing things I shouldn’t have. My family turned their back on me and put me there. I got a job working for Hollywood Video and eventually became a shift manager. I left there and moved to a small town. I recorded a song I wrote before that. It featured Max A Million (“Sexual Healing Remix featuring Shaggy”, “Take your time”, and “Fatboy”). My song was titled “Ride til the anger dies” which I wrote in the shelter. It was about learning how to control your temper and let it go. I started a business in search engine optimization which I learned by trial and error when I was 13. Eventually (recently) it became enough to pay the bills almost. I start ecommerce companies all the time now. I am working on making them profitable and one day I know I will if I just hang in there. A friend of mine and business partner who started http://www.cdarmy.com which I promoted and got a ton of members for. We would like to sell it. I keep reading about people who have made it on the internet becoming rich and I dream about it everyday. Everyday it seems like it will never happen but I hang in there. I do not want all those people who told me to get a job to be right. I have dreams and I want to live all of them. Most importantly now that I have my own family with the other half and 2 young boys all I really care about is one day being able to live confortable paying the bills. Maybe be able to take a vacation sometimes or buy a tub of ice cream without risking my ability to pay the rent. One day I will…. but it seems so far away.

I wish we had that kind of spirit in France where people are too often thinking through rigid schemes. And I mean both on the employee and company sides. On the employee side, people view their job as an end and not as a step towards something better, a position where they would perform well, enjoy themselves and earn a comfortable living. But the companies are a bit guilty too : they rarely hire people basing their choice on their potential, energy, will to learn and improve ; they’d rather emphasize on experience, trying to get people who’ve been doing the exact same job for years, hence paving the path for routine, boredom and ultimately carelessness. Hiring someone shouldn’t be the basic meeting of two needs (of a job, of someone to do it) but instead some kind of a partnership towards a single goal : improvement.

Seems like a no brainer. Go for something that your over qualified for, then learn all you can and how to improve the business. You would stand out rather than getting lost. That’s better than getting in over your head hoping you can make a difference and stand out when you are trying to keep up because you don’t have the skill set.

I agree that experience is often the best post-graduate education. No class can teach you how to be reliable, work for difficult people, or how to manage your time effectively (though many may claim to). These things take experience, usually under an unforgiving taskmaster.

Good Question, I would sum it up in one word….freedom.
The freedom to not have a boss watching over your back questioning your work.
The freedom to decided, “you know what, I’m going to sleep in today or maybe I won’t go back to work, ever.”
The freedom to travel around the globe on a whim.
The freedom to make decisions not about whether you can afford it, but only if it peeks your interest and curiosity.
The freedom to decide if I want to eat out at the best chinese or italian place in town versus another night of roman noodles.
Alright so maybe some of those are you’re true definitions of freedom, but I think you can get the point. Basically doing what I want, when I want to do it.

What Mark is really saying … is to learn from the jobs. Even if it’s only to get a better job. So, his advice really applies to all. There are lots of different job positions within one company so, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to quite the company you work for. Mark started the topic about Dream Job or to run your own company and how you have to pay the bills while doing it.
I believe that no matter what situation people are in, his advice applies. That’s why I disagreed with TCz. But, I still don’t know what he truly meant or if my interpretation is correct, because he hasn’t posted again.
I stated: “Shoot people we live in America, we have the most opportunities offered to most people, the only thing that limits us individually is ourselves.”
I didn’t actually mean money. What ever that opportunity looks for that person.
But, now that you mentioned money as a driving factor.. hmmm It’s funny you say that, I wonder how many people are really motivated by money alone. Because ultimately, money can’t buy family, love, true happiness and solve all your problems. In fact you get new problems!!
Time magazine did a nice article “The Secrets of Ambition” http://www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/article/0,13005,901060313-1168286,00.html – For some it might be money, they make it then retire, but for others, they have plenty of money and they keep on working. Bill Gates is a good example of that, clearly he has enough to keep his family retired for generations to come and he also gives a lot away.
Is anybody on here willing to share if money is the main motivation to whatever you have going… like job or business? Post anonymously. What is it about money that drives you?
BTW – Whoever is making teddy bears and sending them to 3rd world countries for kids would be someone I admire…. FAR from being a failure in my book.

I’m almost hesitant to respond as I may mistake what you are saying again…so I will just say that I think many are in here reading for many reasons. I don’t think that every person wants to be an entrepreneur who reads this blog. To me that makes perfect sense. it’s like on This Old House home edition, where they hand three guys a tool that nobody is familiar with and they joke about what it is. Then they are told what the tool actually is for. Then all things become clear.
To understand some of this stuff, you may have to have a 2+2=apple experience. A qualitative change of direction must occur. ie reading a book like Rich Dad Poor Dad might do just that. We are often taught that working for others is the only way. It’s not that anyone can’t understand, it just might take a shift of perception for that person to see an alternate route. That shift of perception is often hard won.
Jump out of that plane without a parachute, it’s ok. Because a parachute will appear. That’s all. Anyone can go into business and make money. Anyone. But you would have to be driven by something other than money, I think. You would have to believe you can improve the world and make people happy to justify all the slaving away 16 hours a day. That’s my take on it.
Not everybody is capable of starting a business, and staying in business, but anybody can start one. And if they do not want to start a business that is fine with me, and should be fine with anyone. In America we are free to “fail” thank goodness. We are free to make teddybears for children in 3rd world countries and send them over for free which makes us a giant stinkin’ failure because we are not raking in the millions. America is truly a free country but money is not the only yardstick of success, even though we are told on TV endlessly that money is all there is.
I am just in here on blog because I attended a Santa Barbara charity basketball game once that MC played in. I had somehow lost my keys at the venue, and was attempting to track them down. I was being put thru endless questions by the security guard who (by the way) had my keys but would not give them to me. Mr. Cuban strolled by, and took one look at the situation and immediately gauged it for what it was. He needed to chat with the security guard anyway, apparently, and so the guard handed over the keys fast!!! to get rid of me, so he could talk to important people. Yay. I had my keys back. Otherwise I’d still be there answering questions. What struck me was that MC immediately gauged the situation with one glance. Smart man.
I’ve already gained some from reading this blog. I read more books, and give myself permission to buy books that are pricey lately. It’s ok to “waste” money, because no book is a waste really, especially if it’s non fiction. That I learned from this blog. 😀
So didn’t mean to offend, Darci. We all have gifts differing, and we are all here to learn whatever it is we are after.

He said that he makes them and was giving them away today because he doesn’t have time to market them. She tells him that good friends of hers own some skate shops and knows they would be interested in his product.”
Networking is huge and you never know who you will meet. I thought I would post this, because I believe that so many people have ideas and don’t know what to do with them. That’s where books and meeting other people comes in. You have to network, it’s key. If your not a people person then find someone who is.

First, I never used the word – Stupid.
I don’t know how Tcz really meant it. But, I can tell you my perception of it. It seems that he is inhibiting people. He suggested that some aren’t to a level capable of comprehending. I did translate that to a level of intelligence, therefore telling someone there are not intelligent enough to understand Mark’s advice. Seems absurd to me. So, I wondered where he based his opinion from. Guess here – He probably doesn’t know many people on here, so I assume that the experience he is talking about is of his own. Most people talk in terms for others, when in reality it’s their experience. I.E. a mother may say “You feel overwhelmed when the kids are running around screaming. It makes you want to scream” – Well in reality the person is really saying “I feel overwhelmed when the kids are running around screaming. It makes me want to scream” Think about that next time you hear someone talking about something.. change the “you”s to “I”s.
Personally, I went to Tcz’s site and immediately wondered if he has a clothing line. He should if he doesn’t. I know someone just south of OKC who used to design clothes and may be able to assist him.
Even if you are raised in an environment where going to College… getting a J-O-B.. is what is expected, that you can make different choices and I would imagine that’s where people are reading Mark’s Blog, because they admire his lifestyle and wouldn’t mind duplicating it for themselves to some level.
My dad was like that… go to college, he doesn’t like banks and stuff. It’s funny ‘cause I can remember driving around with my dad when I was 12 years old, and thinking .. yeah but, someone owns that McDonald’s, someone owns that Store and that store.. I never really wanted to own a storefront but, I think I realized that there are other possibilities available. Shoot people we live in America, we have the most opportunities offered to most people, the only thing that limits us individually is ourselves. I know I have done it and I am sure Mark has done it. It’s overcoming that and learning from our mistakes that are key.
A good friend of mine says this well. The definition of “Crazy” is doing the same thing over & over and expecting a different result. – True!!
I always say to my kids – It’s okay to make mistakes, but if you keep making the same mistake over and over, that’s when you are in trouble, because you are not learning from it.

My friend’s daughter, who’s almost 18, came over to my house while I was going through the mail and there was a credit application. I asked if her mom ever showed her how to read one. She of course said no, so I had her open it and tell me what the interest rate is and how much it goes up if you are late… We went through the details and I felt like she just learned a piece of reality that will hopefully help her soon. I did this with my son when he was about 10 years old. We actually made a game about it called “Guess what the percentage is in this one.” LOL
Richdad Cashflow 101 Game – is our favorite family game.. about 5 years ago… kids love it. It’s always fun to have the neighborhood kids over to play.. then I get a call from the parents wanting to know why their 10 year old is asking how many properties they own and how much creadit card debt they have. .. oops. Classic.. just about 2 years ago we played.. and my son who was 13 years old at the time.. gets a Real Estate Deal card but, doesn’t have the money so, I say “I will front the money, you take care of the property and we split 50/50” he says “No one does that” I said “Oh yes they do, we do it., for real” looking puzzled he says “Okay”.. then a card comes up about the plumbing going out on the properties and I pay the bill. Then it hits him! “Oh, I get it. You put the money up and I do the hard work, like cleaning it and taking care of the property. That’s my job.” I was proud of my son…. We got a buyer card on it and sold for double and I got my money back then we split the profits.
Surround yourself with like minded people!!
Boot the nay sayers, or at least keep them at arms length… most of the time it’s family. A lot of people don’t want to see you successful because that would mean, in their head, that they aren’t by comparison, even thought that has nothing to do with you personally. Keep that in mind when the nay sayers start talking.
Join some clubs or do something in your area where others go. There are lots of Industy Associations and Clubs – like Real Estate Investing Clubs and they usually hold seminars. Go to your local Chamber of Commerce and see what events they have. Some have networking breakfasts and dinners once a week.
I better get.. I have lots of work to do.

I like to be paid to learn. Actually, what Mark is saying is he took jobs that were interesting to him at the time and while they did not last long, they offered him invaluable real life experiences that eventually led to the success he has now.
Personally, I have decided that I don’t take jobs anymore, I take challanges. I’ll flunk most Job Interviews but succeed being interviewed for most challanges that people would turn down. The harder the challange – the more I like it.

I didn’t take it that TCz was calling anyone stupid, Darcy. If one is raised to see everything as a learning experience, and to honor learning, or to believe that getting ahead is worthwhile in it’s own right, then one might be more open to the idea of doing whatever MC recommends, is how I understood the comment. That working for another person your whole life might not be the only option, is what is suggested by many.
I like the fact that someone mentioned Rich Dad Poor Dad. That is a great example of a book that does a reframe. I haven’t read it yet, just scanned it. Too pressed for time the day I picked it up in bookstore, but it looked worth a read.

This sounds exactly like what Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, explains in his books. Seems like you were doing this before he even though about writing books financial indpendence though.
As I read more and more about entrepreneurship and becoming wealthy, I find more of these similarities between successful people. They all have basically the same ideals and principles about learning, working, setting goals, and on and on.

It is so funny to watch all these “Wharton/Harvard/(place school here)” graduates and “Successful Business People” go the Trump show Apprentice for a “JOB”. If you are already successful- What do you need a “JOB” for? I don’t have the education of these people, but I wonder about their true level of education when they cannot figure that out. Trump may be a stepping stone for some of these people but if you are already successful do you want a “JOB’ or do you want the thrill of starting something new and watching it grow? Personally I will take the later.
Mark you hit it on the head with your show the Benefactor. You gave each person a chance to draw on their own spirit to show you that they were deserving of the final reward. No promise of a “JOB” – just put up or shut up… I loved it..

Everyone has choices. It sounds to me like some are making the choice of being victims.
You don’t have to be super smart to start your own business. Shoot, I know a guy that paints helmets for extra money.. there’s a business. Another guy, cuts grass.. gheeze doesn’t take rocket science. So saying your not smart is a Victim Statement.
BUT you know what’s worse that thinking YOUR not smart. IS TELLING OTHERS THEY ARE NOT SMART. – (Tcz – my guess – your talking about yourself)
For those shooting for jobs their not qualified for. Seems like a no brainer. Go for something that your over qualified for, then learn all you can and how to improve the business. You would stand out rather than getting lost. You never will know where that job will lead you.
Stop using dreams as a crutch. Dreams are not realistic. Create goals and have big goals with little goals that will get you the big goal that are realistic. Nothing feels better than crossing off my goals when I achieve them.
Someone said they emailed Mark about wanting opportunities from him. I imagine that he gets a lot of those. The thing is, “What do you have to offer to Mark?” or any other mentor you are seeking. Tip: Find a mentor who has experience but, is on the way up to being financially free. Someone who is already there is sooo busy, they more than likely have already mentored people. Things happen and priorities shift. Find someone who is on the right track. Then offer your skills (no matter how small you think they are) to that person and being willing to work and learn hard!! Realize that it is hard work!!! It’s actually easier to go to a job and work set hours (even if they are long) and leave knowing that if the company goes under you only have to worry about finding another job than to own your own business. Dreaming that Mark is going to save you is not good, that tells me that you lost your passion, your drive and just want someone else to give it to you. You have to do this for yourself. Create it.
Everybody has ideas. Everyone!!! Learn to let your mind go and think outside the box!! I am very analytical and I had to train my brain to work outside the box. I am going to use myself as an example because, I don’t know any of you so, I can only use myself.
I did this with:
Cake Decorating – Does everything on the cake have to be edible??? No… (Just big enough for people not to eat…. Ribbons, etc.) I pushed to be more creative
Donut Shop – Why can’t I put a dollar in the tip jar to start the day off?? That with a clear class jar Increased tips 100% — Then Big boobed girl came along another increase of 100% Yipee!! LOL LOL
Internet Programmer – Well.. this was analytical, but, I stretched by looking for ways to do things that weren’t being done on the internet at the time.
Real Estate Deals – You mean every deal is different!! I had to work hard at training my brain…. I am very Analytical so, the idea that deals go down different paths made me nervous because I am so analytical but, I wanted to learn so I dove in and read a lot of books and asked a lot of questions. I got really good at doing Real Estate deals.
I am not going to facilitate you in believing you’re a victim.
If your in a funk – Read books on getting out.
If you think your too old – Find others who became successful late in the game, learn how they did it.
What ever the situation – Learn from others.
If your not on the right track then chances are, you already know this deep inside. Make a different choice. Look in the mirror – that’s a really hard thing to do sometimes. Look and ask if you are happy if you find emotions coming that you didn’t expect, then ask yourself. Why? Only then will you be able to fix it. Know your strengths and weaknesses.

I think it would be great if internships were built into every business degree, especially in the Junior year of college. I remember getting out of college at 21, with this idealistic database in my head of what I believed was real, and having to completely tear it down, and rebuild it the first two years of actual employment. (business degree) It was embarrassing, it was annoying, and it made me wonder if having a degree was more of a liability than an asset. If you get out of school thinking things are a certain way, and then discover it was all nonsense, that can’t be good. It’s a flaw in the system, possibly caused by the profs having never worked outside the university themselves. What is in the books is not real world. It’s an idealized pipe dream.
Also, in most companies nobody wants to teach you do to something you have not already done, unless you are working for free. Most are looking to hire someone who has already done the job. That’s just the real world (in my experience) Maybe, in your line of work, back then, not many people knew about computers, so they were willing to train.
Or you just impressed them so much, they wanted to make sure you were working for them? Nowdays, an internship might have to be the route people take.

So, I think that there is seven degrees of separation to the seventies Fiat 124 Sedan, if that was it. My 75 took me from LA to Berkeley and then to MN. Along the way, I, too learned of banking when they were having audits for the first time. Lots to be learned when you estimate the costs of doing audits of major banks, like B of A, Wells Fargo, in San Francisco. Or worked on the first computerized stock clearing system – punched cards, anyone.
Yes, it is learning by doing. After that, I went to learn how folks researched and taught professional accountants at USC. Eventually sold the Buick, got the Fiat and left the volleyball at Manhattan Beach for teaching and research at Berkeley.
The early Capital Asset Model theory building and Capital Markets Information Economics filled the joint Finance-Accounting workshops with Stanford. In my move to MN, I was lucky enough to find a Seventh Day Adventist in Jamestown ND who ran an automobile dealer. After limping all night on the freeway from the West, I found an open dealer on Sunday who could hoist the Fiat and see the need for transmission fluid and leak stoppage work. I do wish that those cars didn’t rust since MN was too much for it. And I learned to appreciate religious diversity.
It seems you are overlooking learning about the educational estate. As in the Military, Industrial, Government, Media, Health Care, Educational complex. Lots can be learned about what is happening there as it impacts the world, often at what might be called the procrustean level. I think you would be surprised at how simple the development of much of what is now well accepted, finely tuned financial models are slowly revealed from rather basic work in other related areas such as math, economics, etc.
So, basically agreement here. It is about working within a field at a basic level and keeping the focus on what is happening not what is the way it is supposed to be. Jumping into the deep end knowing you can swim to the shore or stay with friends.

From the responses, it seems like a lot of people have themselves mentally trapped into trying to create the intertia to get a job with no experience, or want to be self employed in some form, but just don’t know how to get there. Just hustle up deals. It doesn’t take a lot of capital, and if you are going to be self employed, to my way of thinking, you should be able to hustle up and close a deal anyway. For instance, in the real estate arena. Find an investor that says, for instance, “I have money and I want to buy a property in Texas.” You say you will find him a property, and you agree on your cut. Then, you go find a property. You drop a property in his lap with the criteria he wants. If you drop $50k in someone’s lap and there is more to come, they will cut you $5k or whatever, no problem. Wouldn’t you?

You won’t have much luck telling people to get jobs and to learn from their work because the thing that allows someone to comprehend an idea like this is also the very thing that allows them to learn and take their experiences with them in the first place. In other words, the only people this advice is relevant to are already doing this on a macro level in their lives.
I think your most gleaming recurring error is that you seem to assume that almost everyone has the capacity to learn from you.

First I’d like to lay the groundwork for my perspective. I’m 45, married, MBA, Veteran yet I consider myself a failure from a working point of view. I’ve been self-employed not out of want, but out of necessity. I’m the only child of my fathers ten children to go to college, yet my income has been embarrassing to the point I don’t like to discuss it.
I’ve been fired more than once, while my honesty and integrity haven’t been in question. I wish I had the answers. I received a SPEA degree when Reaganomics became popular,now I’ve got an MBA when the value seems to be dropping.
Maybe real success is possible, but the older I get the scarier the reality of failure becomes. Ironically there is this paradox that does become evident. Fate and destiny are a part of everyones life, but our desire and ability to change it is limited by our chosen morals, beliefs including what and whom we are willing to sacrifice to accomplish our objectives.

To be fair I should point out that I used to email Mark all the time. I frequently requested employment, financial assistance, advice, anything, everything. I had convinced myself that if I could just capture Mark’s attention, perhaps he might afford me an opportunity.
I’ve often attempted to be creative, humorous, even thought provoking when participating in blog maverick discussion. Trying to stand out, trying to get noticed. I realize I haven’t always succeeded. There have been times when my efforts were probably counterproductive. Still, persistence should count for something, right?
Getting a ‘good job’ is difficult when you don’t have the requisite degree or certification. Employers tend to look past you. So what to do when you’re not qualified? I continue to overcompensate by being creative and persistent.

You know.. it’s funny how life works if you let it.
I was a Cake Decorator and Bakery Manager (Union job – paid well – really liked it), I quit because they wouldn’t cut back my hours. I wanted to work 5 days and they wanted me to work 6 days – I needed to be more with my kids so, I quit and got a job at a donut shop…. A major step down if one chooses to look at it that way. I showed up wearing a suit to the interview. I later found out that my competitor showed up in shorts and barefoot. I never did let him know how much I knew about making donuts as I was the cashier getting donuts and coffee for customers. After about 6 months, I met a man who was a regular of the shop and discovered he owns an internet company (This was in the late 90s) – I convinced him to interview me, what I haven’t told you yet, is that while I worked as a Cake Decorator, I was going to college for Computer Science and programming is a passion of mine. I stopped attending because I was a single mother and was promoted to Bakery Manager (working long days), I had to make a choice.
I got the job, he taught me how to code for the internet, I became one of their best programmers. Multi-Tiered structures, databases and business logic. I wrote a shopping cart by hand that would handle multi-choices for products (ie. Sizes, colors, styles etc – many sites weren’t capable of doing that at the time). Anyway.. point is.. The company ended up making some poor management choices and I was looking for a new job. I became very valuable on the market because I had 3 years experience in a technology that had only been out for 5 years. Active Server Pages. I could code by hand, no WYSIWYG. I had some companies in a bidding war and got my Dream Job doing what I LOVED – Programming. I worked for a large Entertainment Studio in Burbank, CA with the title Sr. Internet Application Developer. I got to park on the lot and see movies and television shows being made and I was making good money.
See, I believe that sometimes, you have to take a step backwards in order to get 10 steps forwards. Funny to think where I would be if I never took chances.
I found out I was looking at motherhood again and took stock of where I was in my life. The only thing I didn’t like about my job was that, well it was still a JOB. Working for someone else. My husband and I got into Real Estate Investing and have done well. Well enough that I quit my job and then he did too about 8 months later. Quitting my job was a tough decision. It really was my dream job. BUT, I had to spend about 2 ½ – 3 hours a day on the 101 freeway. Was it really worth it? Was it worth my time? More importantly, was it worth the time away from my family? NO.
We since moved to Northern Nevada and I have started a whole new venture that I am very, very excited about. Almost 2 years in the making!!
Doors of opportunity appear, walking through the door is up to you.

Your efficient. That is what makes you the type of guy to learn your trade out in the field, not in school. But the future value twenty years down the road is, on average, going to be higher with an MBA.

Those first jobs we have after college/high school teach us some very important things. Doesn’t really matter what the job is. One learns what sorts of people are out there in organizations and what motivates them. You learn what you don’t like and don’t want. You pay some rent, some taxes and some insurance for the first time changing one’s world view quite a bit. You learn to deal with young acquaintences in a different way…loads of posturing, as I recall. You might find a role model and hope not to let them down.
Those first couple of imperfect jobs really served to tell us all loads about ourselves. There will always be people in those chapters of our lives that we wish we could go back and thank. I’ve done it a couple of times and it felt great.

If one truly desires to be a success in terms of finding the dream job, owning a tickin’ business – there is a level of salesmanship one must attain. Selling the ____(service, concept, expertise, appearance, image, product, and/or widget) is what makes or breaks the dream, people. If one happens to be sick and tired of selling, then the only good advice is to find something you can stomach, dig in your heels, be there 100% every day, play by the rules, and have some patience – you will innovate, rise to the top, and you will find pride and happiness.

Im a tech guy at heart but like anyone, has an artsy inkling somewhere inside. Sometimes I imagine myself taking hold of the reins and doing things business while also benefiting myself such as selling, speeding up production, improving the quality of the product. etc. I also imagine myself working for u someday. I admire a ton of techies but Im sure you are the most real and can relate to Joe Blow next door, whatever race he may be or whatever neighborhood he may be from. I always advise people who complain about their pay, there are only two groups, those overpaid and those underpaid, wouldn’t you rather give value to your employer than be a drag.
I always advise people who complain about the boredom in their job to look for a task not being done and take it on without permission. The worst thing that will probably happen to you is they’ll tell you to quit. The best, a promotion and more money and you helped the company.
If you can’t find a job, offer to work for free for 30 days. Entrepreneurs everywhere have a real problem turning down this offer.

Mark — Excellent post. I’m 3 years out of IU undergrad myself and feel much the same way you did about your first job. I’ve considered going back for my MBA many times, and though I think and MBA education may be worthwhile down the road, I can honestly say I’ve learned more in the working world than I ever did in school.
I learned how to read, write, and think critically and have found that those skills, with a little instinct, can carry you far enough. I’m in my first entrepreneurial venture now and have learned more in the first six months of planning than I ever could have in graduate school.

Outstanding, Mark. This is a wonderful followup to your C-Span Q&A interview a few weeks ago.
“Learning” is what schools/colleges and others teach us how to do. If we aren’t taught “how to learn”, the quality of life’s experiences diminishes.
As kids, many of us learn from the examples set by others who are important to us. That’s where it starts…maybe not so much “what” we learn but how we collect and process the information…. that is, “how” we learn.
The priority of “learning” in our lives is one of the greatest examples we can give our kids. Reading books, newspapers, internet newsstories, studying and understanding all different types of religions and cultures, watching historical films (at Landmark!), having friends over to discuss different issues stimulates our brains, makes life interesting and teaches our kids “how to learn.”
Great topic…ought to be a priority to each parent and school administration to teach our kids “How To Learn”.

Mark, your comments are dead-on. However, you seem focused on work after graduation. What about gaining work experience during the summer months in college and perhaps even between the junior and senior years in high school and between high school graduation and starting college? Although it’s tough to do and not sacrifice your academics, sometimes work experience can even be gained during the school year.
I’m not talking about minimum wage service jobs such as flipping burgers, etc. However, I personally think every teenager would benefit from such an experience, if for no other reason than to give them added incentive to do well in school so they *don’t* end up doing that for a living.
My best friend from high school worked part time as a stringer for the local paper and parlayed that experience into a full-time job there followed by a full-time job at a metro newspaper, all without a college diploma.
I worked countless hours (first as a volunteer and then as paid staff) at my university’s campus radio station during the school year and two summers. It was that practical real-world experience that opened doors for radio work after graduation at a time when the job market was very, very tight.
Being willing as you were to bounce from one short-term job to another, absorbing all the “real world” knowledge and experience you can along the way, is unquestionably a legitimate if not preferable post-graduation strategy. Combine that with some paid and unpaid work experience in late high school and college and you come up with an impressive resume and excellent odds in favor of success.

When you first let out of college, you experience culture shock. At this point, it is completely up to you to be self-evaluating. You can strive for riches. You can strive for an intellectual challege. You can strive for comfort. There are so many choices. I would never advise somebody to get an MBA, nor would I advise them to hit the trenches.I would say to each his own. I’m sure there are personal anecdotes to support both opinions. However, I believe the true answer is different for each individual and their desires.

I think that Mark has it nailed. A grad school MBA can be useful but without any real world experience, it can also be very useless. Some of the better grad schools won’t accept students who don’t have the real world learning. I got my MBA after having been in the workforce for 10 years – what I learned in the real world made what I learned in grad school more meaningful and applicable.
I have had people work for me who only have the education (Bachelor’s degree and MBA) and the problem is that they think they know it all and they don’t know what or how much they don’t know, making it hard to train them.

When I worked at IBM, I quickly learned that its not my education or how many degrees I held that was important, but how many professional certifications I had. Well said! I graduated a year ago and started my ‘real job’ in advertising. After 9 months, I left. I liked it, but was offered a better opportunity with a company in the industry I WANTED to be in. I’m learning so much, not just my specific duties, but what other do, how each dept. functions, industry people, trade events, etc. I’m very grateful for my youth and energy…I love to learn! And I get to actually work at E3 this year! Awesome!

Mark, Excellent point, always best to learn on someone else’s dime before launching your own gig. I raise another question I’ve had for years. Why do so few Colleges and Universities fail to include real world experience in their academic programs? Even if it takes 5 – 6 years to get your degree, having an internship experience blended with one’s academic experience not only helps students clarify their occupational preferences, it also makes it a heck of a lot easier to get hired in their field when they do get the diploma. How many of us have heard the statement, we are looking for someone with experience in those first interviews.

Right on. It’s funny because when people ask what our company (http://www.learnoutloud.com) is all about and I say “education” they typically assume it has to do with K-12 or colleges and universities. As if adults no longer have a need for education. The fact of the matter is that as business gets more competitive and global and technology changes quicker than ever people will have an increasing need to learn new stuff. I call this “continuous learning” in the sense that if you didn’t learn a lot of new stuff today (not just a little) then you fell behind the pack.
And for those of us who love cramming our day full of blog posts, quality books and magazines, audio books and podcasts and interesting conversations with super bright people…well, the world is fun and getting more fun all the time.

these are my favorite types of blogs. some people dont want to learn, they do not have the entrepreneurial spirit. for them, getting stable 9-5 jobs is success. i have always preached to my friends, start your own business, be your own boss. after about 10 minutes i can tell if they have the right mind set, if they are the ones that are willing to sacrifice, learn and do what it takes to make it on your own. i love ready about people who start with nothing and become millionaires, that is my dream.

Awesome blog Mark, as usual…I too, have faked it to make it, granted I am only 32 and have not made it big yet, but I will.. I have had some really cool jobs in the tech industry that I have been hired over Stanford grads/Ph’ds. Just sneaking in the door/ so to speak. I believe it is all adding up to something really great. I do not like my current job, but I get to work from home and have some sort of freedom and I know something/ some idea is on its way= fate. Destiny will follow me with all the thoughts I ever had previously of success and i know all of these jobs were meant for a great reason. Especially since none of them lasted long, but they all made sense lessonwise.. so there you have it. A rainbow on the horizon, until my next move up my ladder of events to success. bravo Mark; right on the money; on many occasions in my career I’ve made the decision to NOT go get an MBA but instead to continue learning on the job; I call it fake it to make it. Over the years I have built several skills (sales, graphic design, web design, Emarketing, design/fabrication) this way that when combined allow me to build a start up, boothster.com which is an online resource for trade show booths and exhibits… and with hard work and some luck I will carve out a nice piece of this industry… anyway mark thanks for the on point blog and inspiration… go Mavs!
