  1. I have been a Mavs fan for years and have had a new sense or pride sense Mark took over. What Mark has done for the Mavs is amazing! The AAC is on fire when the Mavs are at home. The Spurs / Mavs series was the unbelievable!!!

Here is the “Avery Grab Bag” video: Priceless, I have easily watched it a dozen times today.

Go Mavs!!! Terry, Dirk, Jerry, Marquis, and Josh – YOU ROCK!

This is not a stream video so no worries 🙂

  2. From ESPN.com:

    3. True or false: It would be a good thing if Mark Cuban were to win an NBA title.

Broussard: True. Mark Cuban is a terrific owner. He’s done everything possible to better his team and franchise, and he carries himself like your average fan. This is clearly not just an investment to him, but a passion.

Bucher: False, if other owners see self-promotion and complaining, loud and long, about every last aspect of NBA operations as the secret to winning a ring. True, if they see thinking out of the box and being passionate about a team’s success as the key ingredients.

Jackson: Yes. Because we all need a little “opposite of George Steinbrenner” in our lives.

Shanoff: True. He’s the best owner in sports. If his brand of fan-centric (and eccentric) ownership was rewarded with a championship, maybe more owners would act more like him.

Sheridan: True. Why wouldn’t it be? The guy may wear thin on some people, but he cares about his product and his reputation, he isn’t afraid to offer his opinion, and if more owners were as hands-on as he has been there would be a lot more buzz about the NBA among casual fans and non-fans than there is right now. The league needs to broaden its fan base.

Stein: True. Dallas and Cuban winning the championship would, once and for all, hush conspiracy theorists forever. It would have to, right? Who could ever again accuse the NBA of rigging anything if David Stern allowed the scourge of the league office — his Lex Luthor — to take possession of the Lawrence O’Brien Trophy? (Wait … who am I kidding? This is the NBA. The blasted conspiracy theorists are never going away, are they? We resume our original programming: Every game my team loses is the refs’ or Stern’s fault.)

  3. Solve the Steve Nash riddle and the Mavs will win the NBA title. You don’t solve the riddle and we’ll go home…

PHX will be a much more difficult hurdle than the Spurs. The matchups are not good for Dallas.

  4. Mr. Cuban please do for Chicago what you’ve done for Dallas and buy the Cubs!!! We need an owner that cares and wants to win!!

  5. hey suns fans, the MAVS are the hottest team ayt now… they will surely put out the fire in you… lols…

Dirk and company will win this series if not who knows, the suns could taste some sweep and GO HOME… Mark, I think TNT really didn’t had the taste for the underdogs… Dirk should be there instead of O’neal… Dirk has the makings of a legend killer… lols… nice shooting hands, man… Mark, you and the MAVS have my support and as long as Dirk stays in BIG D, I’ll be a maverick fan…

  6. Speaking of ticket prices, I am personally going to the Rangers game on Friday instead of the mavs because of the prices. I love the Mavs but please, give me a break Mark!

  7. Hey Mark,

They’re talking about you on sportingnews.com. They’re debating whether or not you’re good for the NBA. I would say yes. Even though I’m a Laker fan and you bag on my team sometimes I think you’re definetly one of the best owners around. I respect what you’ve done for the Mavs. They sucked before you got there and since you took over they’ve been at or near the top of the league. Plus you shine a spotlight on how bad the refs are in the league and thats good. There’s no excuse for a league like the NBA to have such poor officiating. Good luck against the Suns.

  8. Hey Mark,

I’m writing from New Zealand to say the rivalry between the Mavs and the Spurs is one of the best after that series, main reason being that as much as I have bad feelings about Dirk and how annoying he is too watch (Im a Miami fan) there is no one more frustrating that I hate than watching the Spurs, all of them, bitch and moan, particularly Tim Duncan with his continuous wining over not getting calls from officials, he should have played in game one of the Heat and Pistons and seen the calls not being made.

You are right in saying rivalries matter, not only do they matter, sport wouldn’t exist as it does without them. And the world of sports need more people like you pushing for the rivalries to be cemented. Would people have watched basketball if the Lakers and Celtics hadn’t hated each other, would fans watch Football (soccer) if Man United and Liverpool didn’t hate each other. And I think there are some big rivalries coming up the rank, Mavs/Spurs, Heat/Pistons, Pistons/all other teams, its great.

And one last thing if you guys don’t destroy the suns and that wining, annoying midgety surfer boy Nash and his no talent ass clowns you’ll be hearing from me.

    Cheers

    Let’s go Mavs!!!

Haven’t missed a game all season and not gonna start now, just cause of these dang prices!
Just bought final round 4 tickets to every home game, with no refund if not played! That’s how much faith I have/always had in our Mavs! We got it!

  11. Not only were the Mavs getting no love from TNT, they weren’t getting any on FSN or ESPN. It was pretty shabby broadcasting. While the broadcasters and reporters don’t need to resort to drooling all over the Mavs’ bandwagon, they can at least give credit where credit is due.
It took coach Avery to say, sure, the Spurs were a mighty opponent, but *how about those Mavericks?!*
Steve Kerr wore a striped silver and black tie to broadcast game 7, FSN kept talking about how the Spurs lost that game instead of how the Mavericks won.
Heck, even Charles Barkley gave more love to the Mavs…
It’s ok, accolades don’t mean anything. The trophy will say all the Mavs need to say.

    Comment by Emm -

  12. The Mavs played with a chip on their shoulder and showed that they wanted it more than San Antonio did. No one gave them any credit so they went out and took it anyway…

I just hope they don’t have a letdown against Phoenix and think they have it in the bag. Dallas is the better team but I think the Suns match up them very well. Should be exciting.

It looks like my prediction of a Dallas-Miami final is coming…

  15. Mr. Cuban,

Congratulations! Biggest win in Mavs history for the best owner in pro sports.

An email I sent to Mr. Buck Harvey of the San Antonio News Express after game 4:

    Mr. Harvey,

With all of the media attention focused on the Kobe-Shaq divorce and two-time MVP Steve Nash’s impact on Phoenix, lost is the fact that Dallas will (eventually) get a ring because of Mark Cuban’s foresight. An eventual two-time MVP’s former team gets better after he leaves? That’s the only point you’ll need to make when Nash’s dual MVP worthiness is still being debated ten years from now. I still think San Antonio can win this particular series with a 40 minute per infusion of Manu… but, last night we saw San Antonio’s true successors to the throne. Detroit is about to implode…and Phoenix? Can you say “microfracture?” Dirk has grown leaps and bounds in the leadership and toughness departments; see his efficiency in the first half to blunt the impact of Parker’s early barrage…This
inspired his team’s performance for the rest of the game ala Willis Reed. That was as good a basketball game as I’ve seen since Barkley tried to wrest the trophy from the utlimate pit
    bull, MJ.

Mr. Cuban, I don’t know what Avery has planned for Steve Nash, but one thing I will say is this: If they don’t trap him, you lose. He also needs to look at San Antonio’s approach offensively to Phoenix: Rebounds and easy baskets will decide this series. Dirk must dominate the backboard and you must run on long rebounds and turnovers. This is how you beat the Suns…Devin Harris must channel Tony Parker and push the ball back at the Suns for lay ups. If not, their traps in the half court on your key people (see Suns-Lakers/Clippers)will leave you wondering how you lost to them again. Slowing the game down at all costs plays right into their zone defense–beat them down the court before they can get set. Otherwise, the dam will eventually burst on the other end (see game 7 of Sun-Clippers)–you can’t defend their shooters for an entire game. You would be playing the Clippers tonight if they would have pushed the ball after Phoenix misses in that series.

    Take care

  16. As a Spurs fan, I can’t believe they left you off the Graphic. Well, actually I can, since TNT has done the same thing to us in billboards over the years, even after we’ve won the Championship.

I gotta say, it’s good to be the underdogs. Enjoy this time Mav Fans, because once you win the Championship, there’s a huge target on your head, and everybody comes after you. You’l be playing the Atlanta Hawks, and they’ll be playing super ball that haven’t played all year, just for you.

That said, I think the Mavs have a great chance to win this year, especially with Detroit floundering. Oh, and to those Spurs fans above me: Get over it! We lost, give the Mavs credit, and move on.

I was pulling for the Mavericks all year because I want to see a Dallas/Detroit NBA finals.

You know what makes the Mavericks appealing to me the most? It’s because of you, Mark. Aside from having a great team, no other owner is as involved as you. That’s the kind of owner I’d want to be and the kind of owner I would want to work for. Dallas doesn’t need a Jack Nicholson or Billy Crystal at their games, they have Mark Cuban.

See you in Detroit on June 8th…

  19. I have to say that I don’t believe that Ginobili fouled Dirk at the end of regulation on Monday night. But I am saying that as a Spurs fan, so I do have a biased opinion. But I have to say that the Mavs are my 2nd favorite team in the NBA and I will be routing for your team the rest of the way. I love the way Dirk Nowitzki plays the game and can only admire how good of a basktball players he is. Good Luck the rest of the way, hope you win the 2006 NBA Finals.

  20. Attention all Mavs fans: you haven’t won the trophy yet. All the comments you make about being better than the Spurs and Suns won’t hold water unless you win the big one. The Spurs still have three trophies with the first having YOUR coach on OUR team. The Spurs are still the better team. Win your first trophy and then you can talk smack. Otherwise, the seven game series you just won will be a footnote in history because NO ONE remembers the losers in the Finals.

It would be bad press for the commissioner and others in the business who have been on the opposites of you. It would turn out you are right about EVERYTHING and your way obviously works. If it does work then THEY are wrong and I dont think they can handle that. Watch yourself man. I hope you win and nobody interferes like they have been trying in these playoff games with the bad ref calls.

I predict it will be a very EASY win for the Mavs. When people are full of clouded hopes like the suns and spurs fans are (or the Mavs haters) they just dont seem to use common sense to determine who is going to win. It is clear that Dallas is winning this series. Clear they are getting the gold ball also.

His talent in coaching is unbelievable, he’s just as great as a coach as he was a player! I’m proud of very happy for him in getting the Mavs to where they are now! I was born and raised in Texas and will always cheer on my Texas teams, regardless of who is in it. I wish the Mavs all the best and I am one Spurs fan who will be rooting the Mavs to a victory. 35. The Mavericks, in their entire 26 year history, have never gotten the respect they deserve from the national media. It was only this year when the Mavericks swept Memphis in round one of the playoffs, that the media began raising an eyebrow to Coach Johnsons talented and exceptional team. However, the press was still skepitcal in the matchup between the Mavs and the Spurs. The Mavericks recieved praises and attention after their 7th game overtime win in San Antonio to win the series, but, yet again, the press has moved their attention to Phoenix and is not giving Dallas their due.

I can’t wait til you hold that beautiful trophy in your hand. I hope you will give all those doubters, including the national media, a great big “I told you so!”

  39. The logical explanation is that they made the graphic at the beginning of the playoffs and chose one player from the top two seeds in each conference.
Another explanation is that they wanted at least one player to represent the “go home” delegation.

When you watch the Zapruder film do you see Charles Barkley on the grassy knoll?
I see Joey Crawford and Dick Bavetta.

  40. That is just ridiculous. TNT could have a new graphic made in about 10 minutes if they wanted, to leave it that way is just lazy.

Sounds like the Mavs are getting the same treatment my Pistons got three years ago against the Lakers. Keep your chin up there, eventually the media will come around. Heck, it took the media until this year to finally recognize that the ‘Stones are a legit team, and that maybe it wasn’t such a fluke that they walked all over Shaq and Kobe.

Good luck from one Pistons fan who wants to see a Pistons – Mav’s finals.

    WHINERS…HAHAHA

NOBODY RESPECTS YOUR TEAM BECAUSE THEY HAVE NEVER WON ANYTHING!!!!…UNTIL THEN….

    STFU

THANK THE REFS YES…. THE REFS (THE ONES YOU ALWAYS CRITICIZE) FOR LETTING YOU ADVANCE….

First of all it sounds like you are the one whining, secondly let’s examine the games:

    Game 1 – PF called DAL-24 SA-20 SA WIN
    Game 2 – PF called DAL-27 SA-26 DAL WIN
    Game 3 – PF called DAL-26 SA-33 DAL WIN
    Game 4 – PF called DAL-26 SA-29 DAL WIN
    Game 5 – PF called DAL-26 SA-19 SA WIN
    Game 6 – PF called DAL-29 SA-19 SA WIN
    Game 7 – PF called DAL-32 SA-25 DAL WIN

I personally thought the foul calling in game 7 was ridiculous, there were so many non-calls against the Spurs and everytime a Mav “breathed” near Duncan he was called for a foul. It looked like the refs were trying to help SA win the game.
So you whiners don’t have a leg to stand on, so sit back and relax and watch the rest of the playoffs just like your beloved Spurs will be doing.
PS, I know Mark you can’t publicly comment on the officiating, but I can and it was pretty sorry in Game 7, IMHO.

A Mavs fan for life !

Also, we learned stuff from this triumph, which not only propelled us to the Western Conference Finals but the championship.

Hey, if the Mavs can beat the Spurs, which are not an old team (Duncan, Manu, and Parker all 30 or younger), but still in their prime, they can beat the Suns who lack Amare and have a tired Steve Nash. If he was getting worn out dealing with Sam Cassell, just wait until Harris and Terry get through with him. ; )

Wow, I hope your Suns have more firepower than your tiny mind. But I guess there are advantages of a 7 man rotation, like depth and ah…forced efficeincy?¿?

Ashley you cant argue worth ****. But its not your fault, you backed a lame horse. For 4 seasons the equation of “offense first” has failed. Ask Don Nelson, or D’Antoni after the WCFs last year.

D’Antoni did not learn his lesson. The Suns are 3rd worst in pts allowed, worst in offensive rebounds, worst team getting to the free throw line. Name one NBA Champoinship Team that can herald these stats?

I love watching the games broadcast on TNT, and can sometimes even bear listening to Kenny and Charles. Though not always correct they are still pretty entertaining. I would like to see Charles dip that big melon of a head he has back in that tub of water. Maybe he can break that astonishing 20 second mark he set. Go Mavs

  55. Ironically enough those 4 teams will go home. Dallas is exempt from that promo because the agreement of “win or go home” does not apply to a Champoinship team. All the mavs must do is win, and AJ knows it.

Mark, in TNT’s defense they prolly just picked up the sports section and said “4 top seeds will be promoted” and “we have the best halftime show ever because of Chuck Barkley.”

The faces, comments and complaints you hear from Mark Cuban are the same ones we make all the time (sometime in my pajamas!), thankfully we don’t get nailed with fines or we’d be broke. We love what Mark, Avery and staff have done with this team. This is a group of guys who are decent and take pride in what they do and have worked hard to get here. For those folks who can’t give the Mavs some well deserved praise, change the channel and find something else to gripe about. These games are so exciting and down to the wire I swear you’re killing me!! I dread the end of the season. How about these Mavs!!!

  61. WAIT A MINUTE how can you justify TNT overlooking the MAVS… This series was probably the best ratings draw they’ve had in a LONG LONG time. TNT is barren landscape when it comes to programming and the NBA playoffs are a huge draw and when you have a series as good as this one you have to recognize the players every step of the way.

You really didn’t have the face of a believer after Ginobili drained that trey.

Awesome win! I hope you took the team out to Dairy Queen to celebrate.

  67. I have been a fan of the Mavs ever since Cuban took it over. Mark, you are the first billionaire I wouldnt think has panties up in a bunch. True regular guy and a hardcore fan which is why you bought them. Diane Warwick and her psychic friends need to hush and stop trying to predict finals. Mavs are going all the way and I will be watching!

  68. well they will be talking about us soon enough after we hand it to the Suns and march on into the finals.

  69. Shabaz,

Your an attention starved dork that belongs more on Fear factor than an NBA sideline.

I’m sure with 23 seconds left in the game and down by one, the team will be thinking they need to win so YOU can get some sleep. Yeah right.

  70. Mr. Cuban,

We all admire you for being a true fan and sitting courtside. Your expression when Ginobili hit that 3 was priceless. Yours when Dirk came right back and stuck it to the Spurs was even better. You are a true fan, and the reason I root for the Mavs despite living across the country and growing up a Knicks fan. Keep doing what you do and maybe the NBA too will take notice that the Mavs, not the Spurs, are the West’s dominant and most exciting team.

  71. Mark, there are plenty of mav-haters, from the whole city of San Antonio, to the TNT, Barkley, etc. I say it all should be used as motivation, like you always say. Fear of failure is great motivation. Funny cause I just say you on CMI tonight. GO MAVS!!

  73. Mark the Mavericks will always have haters until we win an NBA Title, so I can’t blame them for putting up a picture of Tim Duncan. I do believe this Maverick team will be world champs a month from now so let the nation keep doubting the Mavericks so we can sit back and all watch them eat crow.

  74. ear Mark,
First, I would like to thank you for brining back the excitement of cheering for a professional team back to Dallas. I havent felt this excited since 1996 when the Cowboys faced the Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. The ambience in Dallas can be summed up in two words: Mavs Mania!
Second, I am a HARDCORE fan. Infact, hardcore is an understatement. I am willing to do WHATEVER it takes for our Mavs to win the championship. However, I feel like going to AAC and cheering loud and proud for the home team is not enough for us to gurantee a win. Hence, I have a propostion that will definately give the mavs the extra motivation to win (just in case we need something a little extra), I am willing to go on a sleeping strike until the NBA Championship is brought to Dallas this season. Youre asking what the hell is that? Well, I will not sleep at ALL until we beat the Suns in the Western finals and advance to the NBA finals and win that as well. I told you I was hardcore. I would like to know your opinion on this before I actually commence the strike. If you can Mr. Cuban, please run it by Coach Johnson and the entire team and let them know that there is a 22 year old fan in Dallas that is going on no sleep until we win the Finals. For the sake of my health, maybe they will be EXTRA motivated not only just to win, but to win quickly. What do you think Mr. Cuban? You think its a good idea? Take your time and reply whenever you have time. Thank you for your time sir. Go Mavs!!

p.s. Just in case Mr. Cuban, please let Coach Johnson and the team know the consequences of long term sleep deprivation. =). thanks.
