My Presidential Endorsement:

They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So why is it the American people allow our politicians to do the same things over and over and we believe them and expect results different from previous elections ?

I’ve looked at the websites of current and previous candidates to get an understanding of their platforms. They all have positions, some of which I agree with , some of which I don’t. But there is one thing that is missing from each and everyone of them, any manner of implementation. Health care, spending cuts, retaining or repealing tax cuts, keeping or removing troops, the soundbites with pretty numbers never end. Not a single candidate provides details on how exactly they are going to accomplish anything. Don’t they realize that economists exists to make lottery ticket buyers look smart, not presidential candidates ?

It reminds me of business plans I get from kids who tell me about their vision and project all kinds of numbers leading to grand results. They can site historical facts and figures, but when it comes time to get into details of exactly how they are going to execute on their plans, the response is basically that they will figure it out as they go. I wouldn’t invest in a business that is winging it any more than I want to vote for a presidential candidate that is winging it.

Unfortunately , they are all winging it. i have no question that they have every detail about how to spend their campaign contributions on advertising planned out. I have yet to see details on how they plan to accomplish all their great promises they are making to voters. That scares me.

It also scares me that despite claims of not being an “insider” or wanting a different vision for America, every remaining candidate spends more energy campaigning to their party than to the issues. I got sick watching Clinton and Barack argue about who was less of a “Reaganite” during one of their few lively debate exchanges.

I actually started to get a little bit excited about McCain. Then he went on the warpath to “mend his riff” with the Republican Party. I can only speak for myself, but the fact that he had a “riff” with the Republicans is exactly why i started to get excited about him. No, he hadn’t presented any more details on his plans than any other candidate, but there was a glimmer of hope that he was a candidate that thought for himself.

(And before all the comments start, Ron Paul is the worse of all the candidates when it comes to detailing how he would execute on his promises. Just saying you are going to cut and eliminate everything doesn’t mean you know how to do it and/or could get it done.)

So here we are, our country has the same problem we have every four years, our remaining candidates are politicians. They know how to spend other people’s money. They know how to assign responsibility to someone else. They know how to beg for other people’s money. They know how to campaign, schmooze and kiss babies. They have no earthly idea how to accomplish any of their promises.

So here is my hope. My hope is that the entire primary process is just the preseason. That its nothing more than an expensive introduction to the Republican and Democratic candidates and once they have picked their winner, a wealthy individual will nominate them self to compete with the 2 parties and run for President.

Are you listening Mayor Bloomberg ? For less than the cost of opening a tent pole movie, you can change the status quo . I’m not saying that I’m going to vote for you yet. As I said above, the devil is in the details. But, I’m betting that unlike the current choices, you recognize the difference between politics and results.

  1. Sorry Mark, I\’ve come to expect better from you. As far as Mike Bloomberg goes, he\’s a Republican! He\’s given more money to the Republican party since 2000 than any other American. He\’s continued the anti-Democratic policies of Rudy Giuliani as mayor of New York, such as illegally locking up protesters at the 2004 Republican convention. But the biggest point you miss is that nobody wants him to run for office. Not one Democrat would vote for him if he ran. Since the Bloomberg campaign started, he\’s only been able to gather several thousand votes. As a fellow, short, Jew from New York, I\’ve got as good a chance of getting elected as Mike Bloomberg! Get serious Mark.

That\’s just what we need Cuban, another one of the the world\’s richest pricks to tell what we need. Sorry guy, but people like you and Bloomberg have lost track of realty. A few Billions laying around will do that! I agree, with the candidates left [Liberal/Conservative] they all suck!! But to think Mayor Bloomberg is the answer is total b/s!
The Republicans, the anti-McCain Conservative have never like this guy and will not vote. The VP spot for McCain has never been more critical.
Mike Huckabee, of all candidates this guy is dangerous! a camera whore and conman, this guy will fine a way to line his pockets and could care less how, [just show me the money] Don\’t turn your back on this guy!
The Democrats [Liberal], Obama and Clinton…just show up!
I must admit, I would love to see you liberal pricks blow it!

  5. I wasted my vote on Ross Perot in 1992 – what difference would Bloomberg offer as far as being truly electable? Didn\’t Ross get almost 20% (18.9%) of the vote, which was the largest 3rd party/independent showing ever, but he still didn\’t come close to winning the election. He really just took votes away from George Bush Sr.

  6. I really agree with your assessment, except for one little thing – Bloomberg. Bah! He may be a billionaire, but he is a politician through and through. He calls himself the \”Education Mayor\” but the policies he has implemented have caused further ruination of the New York school system. Teachers and principals are forced to pass students who show up to class at least once, whether they pass any tests or return to class, to keep dropout rates artificially low – and graduation rates artificially high. I don\’t live in New York state, but this topic has made the national news several times. If Bloomberg has the poor taste to style himself as an education reformer, with the disastrous changes he has inflicted on N.Y. public schools, I hold out no hope that he could fix our entire government.

If you want a successful businessman who does what he says he will do, bring back Romney. Even Huckabee outlines the needed qualities for our next president and describes Romney to a tee. \’Course, what does Huckabee know? He thinks he\’s more qualified because he\’s a Baptist Minister and Romney is a Mormon cultist.

  7. I have been signing the praises of Mike Bloomberg ever since I worked for him in the mid 90\’s and continue to blast off on my own blog bonniebe.com about his value to America. I was honored to sit 20 feet from him for two and a half years. Heard what he cared about, laughed about, screamed about, believed in and how he treated everyone around him. He comes down on the right side of right and wrong every single time regardless of who it pleases. Like thousands and thousands of men and women who have worked for and with him or the millions who have been governed by or watched him run an big, sometimes mean and international city many consider the financial capital of the world, I drank the cool-aid of Mike Bloomberg and recommend everyone here try the same. He is not about party affiliation, he is about tough, no-nonsense, skilled leadership, strong fiscal management and stability, ethics, green initiaitves, dramatically improving public schools and keeping our cities and nation safe from more murdering jihadists. Mike saved New York and its surrounding economies after 9/11. As President, he could easily apply those skills to Washington, which might look like an ego-centric childish playplen after managing New York. With a woman, a mormon, a black, a war hero and a Baptist minister serving as those who have/are giving Presidential politics that ol\’ college try, patriots and lesser characters who at least deserve admiration for their efforts, service and tolerating the nonsense of the press, this race is highly charged with Civil Rights issues, challenging us with critical social, racial and gender mores. Good. Keep it up. The BIGGER point TODAY is, Marc is right. It\’s about the ECONOMY, silly. Yes, continuing to march forward on Civil Rights issues is imperative. But nothing, not one issue – not race, gender, religion, eloquent speech, ethnic heritage or party affiliation – matters to every single American more than financial security and sustainable economic health within our borders and on the world the stage. And no candidate offers that like Mike Bloomberg. He battled, won and succeeded in the financial capital of the world, then invented a machine that disseminates financial information (and any other fact) to the world, remaining deeply wired into US and global markets, establishing his name in financial communities worldwide. Because of his extraordinary fiscal and governing success, knowledge and abilities, he has been courted by and walks into meetings with world leaders with a mantle of respect his world-reknown success has earned. I have no personal agenda here. I don\’t work for him now and am not paid by his campaign. I will never be rehired at Bloomberg LP as his long standing no-rehire policy stands firm unless an employee leaves for public service, testimony to his deeply held value of serving others. I simply have my hand and voice up to raise up a potential CEO President who could stablize and improve this country, economy and world for many years to come. Draft Mike. Vote for Mike. Marc\’s right. Mike\’s the man for the job.

If things worked right, you would pick a wildly rich business person, the next guy would pick the Pope and still another would pick a skin-head. What say everyone\’s name go into a hat and a drunk monkey pick it? Odds are it would turn out to be an average working stiff trying to get ahead while the taxes on his efforts pile up by the boatload – someone who might appreciate how much it costs to fly Air Force One.

  18. Mark,
Thanks for articulating what I believe are many American\’s thoughts and feelings about our presidential options. To me there are a few things about Bloomberg that are appealing: one his wealth could allow him to lock PAC\’s out of the white house and eventually the halls of congress. With his personal wealth, he won\’t be needing my 200 dollar check. His independent status requires that he form a bipartisan cabinet with both Democrats and Republicans working side by side. I think this could be much more effective than Obama \”trying to build a coalition from the other side of the aisle\”. Should the mayor throw his hat in the ring, you\’ll see me knocking on doors in Houston trying to get him on the ballot. And regardless of what his plans/ideas are I TRUST HIM. So I\’ll support him now and find out if I was correct later. After what we\’ve been through anything is an improvement!!

  19. Mark,

I highly respect your opinions, however, I disagee with your opinion about none of the current candidates having a solid plan of \’change\’. As the CEO of a business, you understand (and I do too because I ran a 10MM/Year business), often you understand the proper direction to direct your troops, however you\’re unsure of the \’optimal\’ route to get there. But, you have the conviction to know that the direction needed to change.

Only one candidate has stated a clear change of direction, one that will return America to prosperity. Direction of lower government inteference in business. I implore you to read some of his positions, especially some of his books on the Federal Reserve.

Seek first to understand, and then be understood. An hour of your time is a wise investment. There is a reason why Ron Paul\’s supporters are so passionate – if you start reading, you\’ll see why.

    His name?

Newt Gingrich. And before criticizing this post, go to his site http://www.newt.org and read the ideas he puts forth. Unless you are afraid of reading some ideas that can actually work.

  24. Excellent summary of the situation. If someone would get off the Party lines and think for themselves, and tell us not just what, but a little how, we would probably see a landslide.

Everybody yells change, and then votes for the status quo?

And please don\’t say Ron Paul again, Ron Paul may have a handle on what, but, I don\’t think he has a clue on the \”how\”.

McCain needs to hire whoever is running Paul\’s fundraising and Internet campaign.

    Comment by David Cooley -

  25. Mark, government is not business. You can\’t have a business plan for governing. You can tell people what you want to do and how you\’re going to pay for it but beyond that it\’s difficult to outline a plan because what you have to do is get your bills through Congress and you have to juggle about 100 different constituencies on every issue. Businesses are much more like dictatorships (in governing style, I\’m not saying businesses are evil).

You say all the candidates are too vague and then you call for Bloomberg to jump in. Yet he\’s the vaguest candidate of all! Nobody knows what his positions are and he hasn\’t been vetted at all by the national press. He has not withstood the vigor of the campaign trail, which is in itself a test. (See Fred Thompson.)

And for all you Ron Paul supporters, why don\’t you just cut to the chase and become anarchists? It\’s easy to be AGAINST everything, to tear down. Try being FOR something for a change, try building.

  26. This nation can not be lead or governed as it has been in the past. There\’s not one politician campaigning for the presidency who will have, if elected, all the solutions for the myriad issues and problems we face in the traditional…\”let\’s roll up our shirt sleeves and get to work\” framework. We are near the tipping point financially to be able to fund simple infra-structure maintenance, let alone fund health care, improve education or re-build a near broken military. What this new century requires is a leader whose best attributes are statesmanship…and salesmanship; A unique individual who will understand that successful international relations in the 2000\’s will essentially be merchandising, marketing and public relations in support of his product…the United States of America. He or she will not pretend to have all the answers, but will be smart enough to be surrounded by experts in economics, education, social welfare and the environment; people who are brilliant minds…and not political cronies. Unfortunately…the current system only creates political clones of the past…and we continue to ride this treadmill of incompetence.

  27. I wish that the Candidates would address the rantings of Chavez from Venezuala regarding his threats to cut off sales of oil to the U.S. How would they handle a potential threat such as this one? Are they willing to open up the Alaskan oil fields to prevent us from being held hostage by oil producing counties in the near future? Or will it be politics as usual? If you do nothing, nothing will happen! The squeaky wheel gets the \”oil\”! The Amercan public must \”wake up\”! Make the politicians address the real problems, not side step them! The political pundits are asking the wrong questions at debates to help the candidate of their choice look good. Ask the hard questions!

Root should be considered as a more credible 3rd party challenger than Bloomberg. The Libertarian Party has a credible track record, and has over 500 people serving in public offices nationwide.

Bloomberg doesn\’t have jack. Plus, he\’s likely to ban smoking nationwide and enforce other Nanny-state proposals.

  30. I actually started to get a little bit excited about McCain. Then he went on the warpath to \”mend his riff\” with the Republican Party.

The fact that you think McCain went on the warpath to \”mend his riff\” with the GOP shows how really out of touch you are with politics. McCain\’s aggressive support of the war was in full swing when most of the GOP was gingerly backing away from it.

It\’s also amusing that you would label the surge (which is what I assume that you are talking about) \”the warpath.\” Having been in Iraq before and after the latest strategy, and hence having seen its dramatic impact firsthand, I\’d advise yo to reconsider your characterization, as the additional troops and aggressive counterinsurgency strategy has save the lives of thousands of Iraqi civilians and aided the rise of local governance that may stabilize Iraq.

Get out of the echo chamber, Cuban.

Comment by Bill from INDC -

  31. Wow. Sometimes peoples naivety amazes me. Politics is as old as the hills and theres only one way to fix it.

Detailed plans whether running a company, a government or a war, are just a starting point. After all, specifics are like carrion; at first, they provide a great meal for a few, then the vultures descend and then it begins to stink. Specifics can only help you if a great majority of the voters agree with you.

A growing portion of our country is not particularly appreciative of honest debate, or, for that matter, reading or truth. Many prefer to be lead and fed than to fight, intellectually and physically, to be free. Government is an extension of the people. And a government is only as good as those who administer it. Good government can only be run by good men. And so a country usually gets the government it deserves.

You want a man with an intellect and leadership skills. You are looking for a candidate who has a plan for what to do and how to do it, a plan that you can examine and approve for yourself. However, you allude to character but you leave it out of the equation. Is he willing to keep his word on his campaign promises? Is he willing to suffer to accomplish what he believes in? Or does he only seek the presidency for self-gratification or egotism?

You ask for honest campaigning but honesty itself is born out of truth. And debate is being sifted out of American culture. Political correctness reduces all debate to buzzwords. And from buzzwords we reap sound bites. Many legitimate areas of debate are written off as untouchable. And so we argue and bluster when someone says ho, alien or pimped out but ignore the underlying issues.

You want a good candidate? You want to help this country? Then throw all your money and your energy into establishing a debate about whether truth is important or not in life. Question relativism. Establish a foundation for the pursuit of truth and take all comers, from every background, religion, creed and bent. Without the quest for truth, science and technology itself would have been impossible. Without a standard for truth in civil discourse there can be no discussion, no debate, no honesty, no integrity in politics and no true freedom.

  32. I left out Ron Paul\’s specific \”Economic Revitaliztion Plan\” in my last post, which you can find here: http://www.ronpaul2008.com/Prosperity

Ron Paul understands economics more than any candidate running. Austrian Economics school of thought has had a heavy incluence upon him. The reason most know nothing about this school of thought is because it is purposefully not taught at our \”worship the Fed\” economic departments at all Universities.

Austrian Economics stands for basically three things:

    1. Limited Government
    2. Free Markets
    3. Sound Money

It is primarily point #3 above that is at the heart of all economic problems in America. It is through the Federal Reserve that the hidden tax of inflation threatens life in America as we know it.

  33. Actually, who cares who Mark Cuban endorses? Can you think of a more arrogant person to believe that the \”little people\” like us would wait to see eho he picks? We all know it will be the most liberal and leftist politician possible. No one is going to change support for their candidate based upon what Cuban says. If they do, they\’re lame and stupid.

    Comment by Bill -

  34. So your \”endorsement\” is of a \”candidate\” who\’s not even running and probably won\’t, and Bloomberg is the best you could come up with?

No Al Gore? No Chuck Hagel? People who might actually persuade others to work with them?

  35. What were the \”details\” about how you were going to make money by funding \”Redacted?\” Was it your plan to fund an anti American film as a corporate write-off? YOU may have had a chance to run for President with your money, but not now.

  36. It\’s \”rift\”, not \”riff\”. McCain, being a RINO, has a \”rift\” with the Republicans. Mike Huckabee, being a bass player, has a \”riff\”.

    Comment by Ken H. -

  37. Here the problem you are addressing is described by an historian from over 200 years ago. Why do you think that the candidates constantly promise a greater nanny state and try to expand the size of the dependent population? That is how you get the masses to vote for you!

Words of Warning from 200 Years Ago
\”A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse* from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.\”

\”The average age of the world\’s greatest civilization has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back again into bondage.\”

Penned by Professor Alexander Tyler, a Scottish historian, who in 1787 wrote about the fall of the Athenian republic over 2000 years earlier.
*largesse – generous bestowal of gifts

Do you really think that the majority will vote for someone who asks for greater effort and more self reliance over the candidate promising a wider space at the trough?

    Comment by noprisoners -

  38. And there goes your chances of buying the Cubs Mr. Cuban. Oh well. If Bloomberg was to nominate himself (not them self) as a third party candidate he wouldn\’t win but he might serve to delegitimatize who ever does. Repubs love to talk about how Bill Clinton never won a majority of votes because of Perot. For better or worse our system does not support third party candidacies. Too hard to get on the ballot in all 50 states and it takes time to build an organization to canvass and GOTV. Certain rich folks and retread politicians who are on the outside looking in might like to see a billionaire divorced New York mayor get in the race but clearly nobody else does. Bloomberg\’s own polling shows him that.

As for getting their policies enacted it\’ll be done the same way it\’s always done. Building enough support in the House and Senate to get the legislation passed. Old fashioned sausage making. Bloomberg and McCain would have no chance at that with large Dem majorities. Hillary wouldn\’t either, Clinton hatred is the one thing Repubs and indies agree on these days. Obama has a shot because he\’s the only one who has proven he can attract enough indy and Repub votes for a huge mandate in November.

All the candidates have to win their partys\’ nomination before they can win the presidency. Of course they have to appeal to the people of their party to do that. Hence McCain\’s pandering for tax cuts he didn\’t support in 2001 that are bankrupting us.

Bloomberg has no party faithful he has to appeal to but he also has no constituency unless you count people like yourself Mr. Cuban and himself, the super rich. We already have a party for the rich and we\’ve tried it their way for the last 28 years. It\’s the Republican party. We\’re $9 trillion dollars in debt and are bogged down in an intractable occupation. Get used to paying more in taxes Mr. Cuban. The free ride is over. Everybody has to pitch in, rich, poor and middleclass to get us out of the hole Repubs have dug for us. It\’s time the rich lived up to some of that personal responsibility Repubs love to talk about so much. You\’ll get your chance to prove your patriotism soon.

  40. Mark,

You obviously didn\’t read Ron Paul\’s economic plan. He\’s the only candidate that has the balls to cut government waste. But America doesn\’t hear about him the way they hear about other candidates because corporate owned MSM and their journalist pawns don\’t allow his \”message\” to be heard by the masses. But Ron does lead in all internet categories…so at least the intelligent among us understand what needs to happen to save America from eventual bankruptcy!

  43. Mark,

Not a very original and/or thoughtful take on things. I would question your notion that pure business folks have a better idea of how to accomplish things than politicians. They are just a bit more practiced at polishing their BS so people will assume that they do.

I do appreciate you thoughts on matters (even if I often disagree) and find your blog to be refreshing in it\’s candor. Thanks!

  44. Now that all the canidates want to give amnesty to Illegal Aliens and are for the great borderlessNorth American the Boomberg run is out of the question.

The Media and the politicians have stolen the presidential race from the American people. I have never seen an election like this one in my 61 years. They changed the rules and the dates in the primaries. You need over 50 % of the popular vote to win LA in order to get any delegates, since when? States with winner take all? And if you do manage to win most the delegates you could loose the nomination at the convention by super delegates votes? A candidate who was broke a couple of months ago all of a sudden has a windfall of money to run ads in states prior to Super Tuesday that dont have primaries until March? WAKE UP AMERCIA! Fight back!

  48. President Nanny Bloomberg will ban basketball to save the health of all the fat people who are just sitting around watching the game from the sidelines and to shut down the filthly rich whiteboy owners who are keeping the black people down. Plus, he is very particulair about who gets to join his Billionaire Collectivist Club since some billionires are more equal than others.

    And he\’s an Independent.

Vote Nanny Bloomberg: he\’ll ban you for your own good because he\’s better than you, he\’s a billionaire who can stick his nose in your business and come out smelling like snot.

I\’m with you in hoping for Mayor Bloomberg to run, but fear that the more centrist McCain may deter him from doing so. A larger gap between the two candidates (ie a more conservative Republican winning – Huckabee or Romney) would have benefit him. Think he will still run?

    Comment by Andrew Gilbert -

  50. Good post Mark, on a number of levels. I think we are in terrible shape this time around when it comes to choices, or lack there of. Unfortunately a 3rd party candidate will never get anywhere with the media against them. Too many people get swayed by the spoiler comments and lack of equal coverage. It sucks but that is the reality.

Mccain can\’t win, this country wants out of Iraq and he has been the most pro-war candidate. I liked him in 2000 but he is a shill just like everyone else.

    Comment by Edward -

  51. What exactly is it you\’re looking for when you say they\’re not telling how they would implement things. To pick one example, Clinton\’s health care plan – whatever you think of it – is fleshed out in enormous detail (and can be downloaded in PDF form from her web site). In fact, the candidate whose been least clear on details is the one you liked the most (McCain), so instead you want someone who isn\’t running and has no platform to offer specific plans around.

There are lots of very valid criticisms of the way this whole political process works, but what you\’re saying here is just incorrect. I\’m with you on the need for detail, and I would like to see more; but you don\’t even seem to have looked at what IS out there.

So sorry, it\’s hard to take you seriously here.

    Comment by John Whiteside -

  52. Mark, you have some excellent points there.

I agree with what Chris has pointed out in his comment.

I strongly urge you and everyone else to look into Ron Paul a lot more. His message is perfectly consistent with what it was thirty years ago when he started in politics, including his presidential campaign of the late 80\’s.

In my opinion, for Ron Paul to have such strong and cemented views for so many years, it means that he does have his ideas on how to execute on his promises, and I do think he is very confident with those ideas. It would be silly not to know how to execute an idea to fix an issue that you have been studying for so many years.

Ron Paul has extensive studies in economics, most importantly free-market economics. The economy is such an important aspect of a country\’s functioning, as it is the steam that turns the wheels and affects the whole country. I believe that Ron Pual not only understands the economy far better than any other candidate, I also believe that he understands all the different areas of a country\’s policy decision making (including economic interventionism) and how it ultimately affects the country\’s economy. It is mentioned in one of his books \’Pillars Of Prosperity\’ that \”It is impossible to concentrate on money and inflation and ignore foreign affairs. The two are intertwined.\”

Ron Paul has said that the main motivation for him entering politics was to contribute something towards establishing a free society – that means free market, free people, small government. A free society is the only way a country is to truly prosper.

Again, I strongly urge everyone to look more into Ron Paul. Read some of his books or search through the videos on the web to find out his views in much more detail. I truly think Ron Paul is just not being taken seriously enough.

    Thankyou.

  53. Look, we don\’t want Bloomberg. Yes, this election is about the lessor of evils, but in every case, the Democrats are unfit to run things. (Bloomberg is for practical purposes, a Democrat.) They are unfit because these aren\’t the same Democrats of many years ago. They have been taken over by this 60\’s mentality which is even worse than Socialism.
Watch this video called \”How Modern Liberals Think\” by Evan Sayet. Evan used to write for Bill Maher and he has these people pegged.

These \”Modern Liberals\” cannot be allowed to run our country. We all need to learn about them so they can be countered.

It is a great video. You\’ll need some quiet time and don\’t be afraid to rewind it as you watch it. I\’ve watched parts of it many times.

Enjoy! (Btw, thanks Mark for speaking your mind. You\’ll like the video too.)

  56. I am not ready to give up, just yet, maybe that is my youth talking but I think with the number of voices being heard (record numbers of people voting in primaries) we can effect change by shear numbers. Bloomberg has done an admirable job in New York but he can\’t win (see all other independent candidates in history). I am also afraid McCain has sold his soul to get here this time. We all want change Republicans and Democrats alike. Until news agancies start giving the news instead of selling the spun story of the day brought to you by Corporate America we will never get everyone on the same page. Blogs are a start and I like what you are doing.

  57. Mayor Bloomberg is the man for the job. He\’s just sitting back and analyzing, letting his people gather all of the information necessary to make an educated decision as to whether or not he could actually win the Presidency. I would love to see him jump in the race.

  60. I can\’t respond enthusiastically on the subject of politics. It seems as if today\’s politicians have read Dale Carnagie\’s book. \”How to win friends and Influence People\” just one too many times. Deliver the truth? I have a sneaking suspicion not a single one of them is neither willing or or even capable to do. And what happened to ethics or decency?

This election is worse than high school politics. I\’m waiting for Hillary to promise longer lunches and Obama to tell us how she picks her nose when no one\’s looking. They\’re all out there just doing some song and dance and telling us what a creep the other guy is. Which would you like boys and girls, the puppet on the right or the puppet on the left? I don\’t even care that I am likely to disagree with just about everything a wealthy self-financed candidate might have to say, I am just sick of the lying, bickering, and most importantly the knowingly false promises made by each one of the wannabes in every party.

It is a sad state of affairs that I probably would not even consider a single one of these individuals to run anything in my company, yet they are the only options presented. With the money involved it will only get worse in the future.

  67. A couple things, Mark:

    – This has been discussed before, and it\’s generally acknowledged that Bloomberg will not enter the race if Obama is the Dems choice. It\’s been said that he has hinted that he doesn\’t want to be the person to stop the first possible African-American president, if that\’s the case.

    – Aristotle said that democracy is the worst form of government. He\’s right. It\’s a slow death because those trying to win an office must appeal to a consistently devolving society. What\’d devolving? The stereotypes like morals and ethics, but more importantly involvement, intelligence, flexibility, and sense of community. With all those becoming gradually worse, the politicians follow. (By the way, the two best: Benevolent King and Socialism. Yikes!)

  70. The electorate has always been facinated with the presidency and all the while it keeps sending some jerks to congress. The president doesn\’t make laws, the congress does. All the president can do is sign or veto. Some congress members have been elected/re-elected while in jail or under indictment.

The people need to really consider who they are electing to congress instead of getting emotional about the president.

I know, the president can set policy which is important but many of our problems are the laws that congress passes..

    Just another opinion..

  71. How can you say \”(And before all the comments start, Ron Paul is the worse of all the candidates when it comes to detailing how he would execute on his promises. Just saying you are going to cut and eliminate everything doesn\’t mean you know how to do it and/or could get it done.)?\”
No President is a dictator. Every new program or budget must be approved by the congress and senate. Paul as Presidnet could at least veto the bills sent to him and eliminate the funding for programs he disagrees with.
I\’m amazed that you could say you like The Fountainhead and then not endorse Dr. Paul, actually even amazed that you could say anything positive about anyone else. Actually not so much surprised as disappoointed.

He\’s running a virtually fascist government in New York, doesn\’t pay attention to anything that doesn\’t get the Daily News stirring while wasting resources on worthless shit (seriously… trans fats?), and he\’s a sullen prick to boot; I can imagine him in negotiations with hostile countries.

As a registered Libertarian, I agree Ron Paul is not the answer. Personally, the best candidates on both sides of the Liberal/Conservative fence – Joe Biden, Bill Richardson on the left, Fred Thompson on the right – are out, and that\’s left us with a zealot (Huckabee), a nutball (Paul), a geriatric (McCain), a phony (Obama), and I don\’t even know what to call Clinton. Honestly, my whole vote, I\’m fairly sure, will end up depending on whoever McCain\’s running mate is.

If he picks someone like Condi Rice or Fred Thompson, I\’ll not only vote for him but seriously think of becoming a member of his campaign.

If he picks someone like Rudy Guiliani, I\’ll have to seriously consider who comes out of the Republican side.

If he picks Mike Huckabee, I\’m on the first damned plane back to Canada.

  80. I am not sure anyone would read this after the tons of writing above but I think you got it wrong this time. If you are one of the few that is able to read balance sheets, understand economy, and choose your president by more than 2 parameters, then you have to remember also that there are millions of people that have no clue whatsoever of what the hell is going on.

Not convinced? Here is another one – whatever they decide to share in details they will get torn away by the public. Either position on a problem will cause such disturbance that it definitely is not good worth it sharing anything to the public, when for years presidents have won without sharing shit.

And why share anyway? Maybe they don\’t even plan on doing anything specific.

Politics is just not business, it plays by its own rules, which often seem to be contrary to intuition unless you get into it.

  81. Here is the skinney on the Good Dr.:

    Residence United States
Other names Rev Dr Joseph Geronimo, Jr.
    Kamal K. K. Roy
Kamal Karna Roy (also known as Kamal K.K. Roy and Rev. Dr. Joseph Geronimo, Jr.) is a prolific pro se litigant who, since at least the early 1990s, has filed numerous lawsuits throughout the United States and its territories under the names Roy and Joseph Geronimo, Jr., as well as under the names of entities that he is affiliated with, including International Siva Consciousness & World Religions, Reforms International, Handicap Interests International, and Jungle Democracy.[1] Roy\’s lawsuits are often brought against multiple defendants, and feature long, unconventional complaints. Roy has filed lawsuits against God, U.S. Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, fast food restaurants, foreign leaders.[2], and Wikipedia [3] [4].

Roy\’s lawsuits have addressed, among many other things, actions taken by President George W. Bush, overcharging by telecommunication companies, the appointment of Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court, and \”failure of democratic societies and God\’s role therein.\”[5] In 2006 Judge Michael W. McConnell of The United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit described a typical Roy complaint:

Roy, a/k/a Joseph Geronimo, Jr. filed a 115-page complaint, a 144-page amended complaint, and a 40-page second amended complaint against over sixty defendants, including among many others President Bush, God as U.S.-based divine benefactor, several government agencies, The New York Times, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. In addition to pages of rambling discourse, the complaint contains numerous illegible handwritten remarks.[6]

The Tenth Circuit went on to affirm the district court\’s dismissal of the complaint holding that no discernible claim was apparent from the complaint. Judge McConnell also humorously noted that the court \”strongly suspect[ed] at least one defendant was not properly served.\”[7]

Most, if not all, of Roy\’s complaints have been dismissed. A 2006 United States District Court for the District of Delaware opinion, Jungle Democracy v. U.S., describes Roy as \”no stranger to litigation\” and provides a partial list of Roy lawsuits that have been dismissed since 1991.[8]

Despite Roy\’s lack of success in the courts, his lawsuits have been discussed in law school classrooms and in law related blogs.[9] [10]

In April 2007 Roy filed a civil rights action against, among others, CBS Broadcasting Inc., MSNBC, the United States Government, and controversial radio shock jock Don Imus.[11]

In October 2007, Roy filed a suit in the US District Court, Middle District of Florida, against \”Wikipedia Encyclopedia, USA, All News Media, All State Board of Elections, Federal Election Commission\”. See Dkt. 3:07-cv-00994-VMC-HTS.

  83. The problem with democracy is politicians have to spend more time trying to get and stay elected than on affecting real change.

The problem with America is voters that generally don\’t care about details or abilities so much as personality and who\’s going to do best by them as individuals rather than us as a country.

The problem with government is that the challenges alone it faces are dauntingly complex yet that pails in comparison to the arcane and inane rules and regulations generations of a broken system have produced.

I have hope that once in power both Obama and McCain will have the strength of spirit to champion real change and true reform, though given the tacts they\’ve taken in order to get elected I can\’t say my hopes are as high as they could be.

And electing a billionaire mayor just cause he\’s from outside the system doesn\’t necessarily seem like the answer to our prayers, though I will admit I know less about his stance on issues than Obama\’s…and that\’s saying something.

  85. You make some very good points Mark.

But we must consider the process here. Politicians are addressing the masses here….The masses are not interested in details…nor would they understand them.

All of the politicians (with the exception of Ron Paul) are making promises on what they are going to \”give\” to their voters. Free this…Free that…

Ron Paul, on the other hand, is not promising other people\’s property, but only to leave you alone and most importantly follow the law..i.e., the U.S. Constitution.

Yes, he wants to cut government waste, but he specifically says that he plans on going after the Trillion dollars spent overseas…That is his immediate target, and he says it all the time.

I would look into Ron Paul a little closer Mark…when it comes to understanding economics, monetary policy, and foreign policy, no one can touch him.

  89. You got the money Mark, how bout you being that 3rd candidate? You\’ll get my vote.

    Comment by Terry Kearns -

  90. Bloomberg has often said that he\’ll only enter the race if a high enough percentage of likely voters are dissatisfied with both parties.

The platform shared by Obama and Clinton has been enough to energize the Democrats into being content with the two party system again, but there are a lot of anti-McCain Republicans who want to vote for someone who\’ll be more conservative when it comes to immigration and economic policies. So Bloomberg is still considering entering, I\’m sure.

I don\’t think Bloomberg will enter, but I would love it if he did. He would also be the only technocrat candidate now that Romney is out, which most who read this blog would like to see.

    Comment by Keith Peffer -

  91. Thank, God! I\’m so glad someone finally said it and, of course, I\’m not surprised it\’s you, Mark.

This is the very reason there are so many disenfranchised voters in this country (myself included). Year after year, all we get are a bunch of rich people who, as you said, know how to spend other people\’s money, and never people who know how to present and execute their \”business plan\” for America. Now, do we need a business(wo)man to be president to regain our footing? No, I don\’t think so. But we do need a person in the White House that not only has a ideas (we all have those), but an itemized and actionable plan for how to get there? Well, yeah.

It\’s just like anything else. You want to get the Mavs to the Finals. You don\’t just sign this player and that player and expect to get there. You evaluate, you weigh, and you consider how a player will gel/fit with the current team and its flow in order to achieve your desired result. Then you explain to your fans (constituents) why it is that this decision will be good for the team and for them.

I\’m not sure what will wake these people up, but we need to figure out what that is and make it happen because I, for one, cannot stand the current crop of presidential hopefuls we have and don\’t care to vote for a single one of them.

    Comment by Ryan -

  92. Thank you for writing \”My Presidential Endorsement.\” None of the candidates excite me and I don\’t believe any of them. Your blog helps explain why the American people, and especially me, have such a distrust of politicians. A question I have is: in today\’s world of 15 second sound bites could a politician with a well thought out plan get elected or would the details bore the people who control the media? I don\’t know, but I have my doubts.
