My cellphone

Ah, the small annoyances. Over the years I have had reason to have the cell phone number of various celebs, from sports to entertainment to business. One thing you learn very quickly is that they change often. I never really knew why until recently.

Somehow, I gave my cell # to someone who gave my # to someone, who gave my # to a bunch of idiots who like to get drunk and call me at 2 in the morning. Its not really a problem because I use my cell so little and so few people have my number, I know whether to answer the phone by the caller id number. If its not someone I know, i let it go to voicemail. No problem.

Except for some reason , checking my voicemail(which I dont do that often), and every time hearing a string ofmessages from drunk idiots is like hearing a fork on a blackboard to me.Not a lot of thought or entertainment value , they all sound the same. You hear the music, some guy giggling “I just called Mark Cuban”,his buddywith the witty come back of “Cool dude”. Then the challenge that all prank callers must face.. “I got his voice mail should I leave a message” , followed bysome girl chirping “really, its not really his voice voice mail is it…let me hear”. All culminating in one of them yelling “Mavs Suck, Go Spurs”.

It only takes me a second to delete them, but I cant get past it for some reason. Maybe its because Spurs fans are just irritating and rude at all times. (Twice management has called to apologize because of actions of the fans or gameops people, compared to never for any other team. ). Maybe its because I dont want to have to change my number. Im not sure. But it certainly irritates the crap out of me.

So what brought this all up ?

I was going to do a reverse phone number look up on the net for the 3 calls I got tonight. Before I could get there , I ran across a great story written by a lady who got Chris Rock’s phone number after he had recently changed it. It helped take the edge off the mavs’ losing today, and having to listen to drunken spurs fans leave me messages.

  3. Mr. Cuban,
Your outrageous, classless behavior is an embarrassment to Dallas, and an absolute smear
on “your” team: the Dallas Mavericks.
Your deportment makes Jerry Jones look like a
Chevalier in the court of Louis XVI, by comparison.
Sell this team to a group that will allow Avery Johnson and/or Donnie Nelson to be the voice of the Mavericks. They still have the respect of Dallas and the NBA.
Take your Dot-com bucks, and move to the Left Coast where you will fit in nicely!

  7. There was a really interesting article a while back about people who had to deal with “recycled” phone numbers. Basically people who used to have cell phone subscriptions dropped their number for whatever reason and the carrier reassigned them to someone else. That person then got stuck with all these charges b/c the original owner never cancelled his subscriptions. I’m going to try to find the link for you…

  8. We have a somewhat related issue also annoying us on a landline. A local school has a phone number almost the same as ours-with the last 2 digits reversed. We get at least 3 calls a day for the school. we even have a message on the machine that tells people the correct school number and not to leave a message on our phone but it doesn’t help.

  9. I bet when you check the numbers from the clowns who call your cell phone, you will find Junior Miller’s number in there somewhere. Who is a bigger “homer” for the Spurs than Craig? Who else would call you in the middle of the night after throwing back a few? Whoelse is better at poking a stick at a wounded snake, unless it is your good friend Gordo.

  17. Mark, i resonate with what your saying. Sometimes, you never know, you might end up with the number to an ex pizza place. I however am DESPERATELY trying to change my number to one number specifically. I want the last four digits to be 9455…if ANYONE has a verizon number that ends in 9455…i will BUY it off of you. i want your number!!! haha. not that im crazy of anything.

  19. I donot see why somebody would give the phone number of somebody to a stranger. I do not have time for such an activity. I am busy creating an interest of cellphone manufacturers or telecoms and or ISPs or banks and or credit card issuers towards supporting financially (translation :donation of seed capital) towards developing a method of delivering an internet service where a cell phone could be used as a client. This can be done by making internet service server oriented rather than client oriented. the method is discussed at

    http://wirelessera.blogspot.com/

If I donot get these entities to donate any capital may be I can get the music Industry to do so because this method of deliverying internet service would wipe out the piracy of CDs and videos.

  22. There are call blocking programs out there already, it just depends if you have a smartphone and what kind.
    http://www.symbianware.com/product.php?id=blacklist60&pl=n3650
That one works on Symbian-based smartphones (Nokia 3650/6600, Siemens SX1, etc).
It gives a busy signal for specified numbers or to every call other than specified numbers.

  23. I like the idea of getting back at the bothersome people who call Mark’s phone, but the sad fact about displaying these people’s number on the Jumbotron is that they would probably be elated by the recognition moreso than being annoyed by the influx of calls. Remember, these are the imbuciles who get a rise out of calling repeatedly and bragging to their friends that they’ve done so. The sad truth is these people don’t value themselves enough, thus they seek a means to impress others to “prove” their “coolness”. In all likelihood, they’d get a rise out of being recognized at a Maverick’s game in front of thousands of fans rather than being sorry for the calls.

  24. I’m up unusually late tonight and stumbled upon your website after checking the Lakers/ Rockets score. I read your bit on Trump, the stock market, and now your cell phone. Interesting reading, until I got to your comments about the Spurs. You don’t seem to realize that you have put yourself in the position to be disliked by the fans of your opponents. Just like there are certain players who stand out to the fans because of their antics (hard fouls, post-game comments about a team or another player, etc) there are some owners who put themselves out there, as well. You are one of the most high profile owners in the NBA because you WANT to be. That is a conscious decision on your part. Because of this, you are loved in Dallas, and not so loved in other places. For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction. You have made yourself the lightning rod, and you have to deal with it.

  25. 1. The story about Chris Rock was actually pretty funny. I’d have had slightly more fun than she had, but she seems like a nice enough person. Coulda been MUCH worse for ol’ Chris.

    2. The idea about posting the Spurs’ fans numbers on the Jumbotron is hilarious though probably the billionaire version of writing your ex-gf’s name on the bathroom stall wall.

  26. After you see where they call from you should post their phone number here and on the jumbo-tron at the next home game with a sign that says please call these Spurs fans at 555-123-4567.

    GO MAVs!

  27. Actually, I like your idea Matt. You don’t have to filter out the non-address book calls, just force them to a second voice mail box – like hotmail’s junk mail folder. You could either check it later or delete it without going through them. That leaves your main box open to hear messages from your trusted numbers. Good idea?

  28. It’s so weird what the Net does… I used to read about Mark Cuban in the Wall Street Journal and see Chris Rock on HBO. Now I get to hear about Mark Cuban’s cell phone peeves and the story of Chris Rock’s old phone number. It’s a weird mix of personal and peripheral.

    Comment by Noumenon -

  29. Mark, you should brainstorm a technology similar to pop-up blockers and spam filters that would intelligently filter your incoming calls. I’m not talking about a caller-ID exclusion based on some list that you actually have to create of your friends’ numbers, but something that can learn who should be calling you and who should not.
