As I get more and more acclimated to my Sidekick 3, which I absolutely love, its got me thinking more about our digital world and why we do what we do.
There is no question that Convergance is dead. We are no longer converging from an analog to digital world. We are fully digital now. Anything analog is a mere remnant, soon to be obsolete.
I also think that the internet has also finally become old news. Not in a sense that we no longer will use it. The internet is fully integrated in our lives and will continue to become more and more so. When i say the internet is old news, it means there is nothing suprising or new about it anymore.
Sure, we may connect faster as broadband speeds trickle up. But thats no more exciting or new than a car coming out that can go zero to sixty faster than a predecessor car. Sure we will see new applications and features. But thats no more exciting than appliances adding new bells or whistles or becoming more energy efficient. Is seeing a popcorn popping button on a microwave exciting ? How about cooking that roast 30pct faster ?
The thrill is gone. Things Change. They become boring. They become parts of our lives we dont think twice about. We just naturally integrate the incremental feature and services
Its come down to the fact that bits are bits. Anything digital can be sent anyhere, received by anyone. Its just a question of how long it takes to get there, how much of it you send, how you manage them and at what cost and price. Its boring.
Any of us have the option of being continuously connected with a wired or wireless umbilical cord with bits cursing through it to devices large or small; handheld, beltbound , desktop or theatrical, you name it. Its really no big deal.
Which leads to where i think we have come in our digital lives.
We now continously choose between a connected or disconnected state, and that is how we define our ongoing activities to ourselves and those around us.
Personally I disconnect when I go to bed. Phone is off by the bed. My wife and I can talk, watch TV, read stories to my daughter. The rest of the day Im connected and i choose whether to allow interruptions or not. Its private time because Im disconnected.
During the day, the perceived quality of my committment to any person, place or thing is typically defined by the continuity of checking whatever digital access device Im carrying. Which in my case is my Sidekick 3. If I pull it out to keep an eye on my email, its my way of saying, something more important is allowed to intrude upon our interaction. Deal with it.
Its something we all experience from both sides. If we are talking to someone, if the phone or PDA comes out, we all slump our shoulders just a little knowing there is something more important going on for the other person(s). We all want to think that we are important enough for the other person to digitally disconnect
Its not a big deal to give our cellphone number or PDA email address, It has become a big deal to have a continuous “thread” with a person. The duration in hours, days, months and years of that thread more often than not reflects our relationship with that person. A delayed or lack of response is a delete key not just to a message , but to a business or personal relationship.
And sometimes, individually, our digital lives become so strong or intense, we all want to think that there is something more important for us to do for ourselves than what some digital bits have in store for us.
Being so continously connected, we all get what I call Digital Cabin Fever. The feeling of being too completely connected and available to intrusion, that we have an overwhelming need to disconnect. THe more i have going on, the stronger the Digital Fever. It hits me strong about once a month. it may be the movies. Its always at a Mavs game. I just turn off the SideKick.
Not silent, not buzz mode. Off. 90 minutes of disconnection is enough for me to get over it.
Digital Cabin Fever isnt a problem. Its not a newly named disease. Its just a reality. It means I think highly enough of what I can do with any of my digital devices to maintain digital connectivity for what amounts to almost every waking moment.
Personally, I am truly connected digitally every waking moment till I choose to disconect.
Im watching a digital network, HDNet, HDNet Movies, TNT HD, HBO HD, etc, on my HDTV.
Im talking, texting or emailing on my sidekick.
Im on my new HP PC in front of my digital LCD Monitor.
Im backing up my digital life to Filesanywhere.com or a flash drive to be able to access my life from anywhere.
Im looking for business information or fun videos online.
Im surfing just to see whats out there.
its a digital life and Im more than fine with it. Im excited about it. But the best part of it is, Im used to it. Its now normal, and I know when I need a break and i take it.
IMHO, the need to disconnect will create the need to get away and keep the doors for out of home entertainment, from movies to sports wide, wide open. Digital Cabin Fever, wont create problems, it will create opportunities.

I totally remember when “convergence” was hot, hot, hot. People kept talking about cars that would email you when you ran low on gas, or fridges that monitored the price of milk. People stopped talking about convergence after the Internet bubble… so it crept up on us without much ado at all. Now even 13 year olds have fancy multimedia phones. You make the Internet sound like it’s a bad thing. I think it’s actually good that the Internet has become standardized because it allows people to be acquainted with each other regardless of distance. Websites such as Webdate, Wealthymen, and Myspace have opened the doors to all kinds of people to meet and have a great time.

But I loathe…no, I HATE the telephone.
Thank god I don’t have a cell. I love to leave the house not having to worry about anyone interupting my thoughts.I hate my home phone, too; it’s rarely plugged in before noon, because, like Norah Jones, this musician likes to sleep in.I resent it when it rings, as if I have to stop what I’m doing to answer it, which I don’t. If the party calling me can’t leave a message, I figure their call must not have been so important anyway.
It’s funny ‘tho, how much crap I get from people about this. People tell me I’m ‘selfish’ for not having a cell; as if they’re entitled to instant access at all times.
They’re not. & I love the freedom of never having to tell everyone I know where I’m at.
& I don’t care if they answer their cell if we’re eating out. Gives me time to work out musical ideas on cocktail napkins. & if I wander off in search of a hotel piano to try out my ideas, I’m sure they’ll understand if they’re my friends & have my best interest at heart.If they don’t, screw ’em; why give them any access at all?

Funny how in the swarm of the 29 comments you’ve received thus far, folks are still yapping about the need to, in a word, “disconnect.” Forgive my ignorance, but aren’t we connected now? I think, MC, that your point is well taken… and proven via the responses, regardless if they’re critical or in agreement. You’re right, the Net is boring as we’ve assimilated like the freagin’ Borg to it. I’m old and I can’t remember what the hell I did without a cellphone (CB radio, baby)!
One of your readers commented (and I paraphrase) about collapsing the digital divide because over 1/2 the world doesn’t have phone access. C’mon, jagoff hippy, you’re missing the point, don’t you think? If you’re connected, then you wait for data. If you’re not, you ain’t getting jack and that’s that. MC, you need some wordsmithing to add after “anyone [that is connected].” Am I being insensitive? Will finishing that last bit of steak on my plate help the starving children in Africa? Let’s not be apologetic or feel guilty for making the most of what’s available.
MC, I’ve enjoyed your blog. Since you got so much dang face-time on TV (and I still don’t get it since you don’t don a uniform and have a 48″ vertical), I figured that I’d start to understand why by starting with the source — you. I got it at first (fan makes buttload of cash, buys favorite team to make it better, and the rest is history). Good story. But why more? Why did Brad dump Jen? Having read that; one can speculate the following. Our digital age allows one to keep track of more people with less effort. Where as before you might have to waste brain space and stress on phone numbers, mailing addresses, etc. there is no need to anymore. You meet someone and enter all their contact info into your “Sidekick” and that makes it simple to recall their information. Sure, ten years ago you could have a rolodex or black book, but that still requires you to take the time and thought of finding it.
The point is: with the digital age, coming from a business perspective, you can manage more accounts and setup transactions in a more timely fashion. Since you don’t have to spend so much time and effort looking up numbers or mailing addresses you can spend more time, energy and thought developing your ideas.
If you don’t have a need to do business in such a way then you don’t have to. But one shouldn’t shrug off the “digital” age as non-sense simply because they don’t understand it.
“Well Joe where’s Steve’s number?”
“I don’t know Les, let me check my black book.”
Minutes later.
“Well Les, I have Steve’s address but not his phone number.”
“Well I guess we can look him up in the phone book.”
“Good thinking Joe.”
“Odd. His number isn’t in here. He must be unlisted.”
“Well I suppose we can just write him a letter.”
Days later.
“Damn Les, the letter got returned to us. How are we supposed to pitch this idea we’ve been working on?”
“Oh well, guess we’ll just have to keep on waiting.”
Case in point. The digital age is more beneficial than it is anything else. Utilization of it is what separates the “billionares” from the “millionares” from the “middle class” from the “blue collar” types. How do you think Bill Gates makes so much money? Sitting around speculating whether or not e-mailing someone or answering a call is rude? No way. Next time you are having lunch with a friend, and you answer a business call that makes you millions of dollars and they get offeneded…pay for their meal. Give them some of the money you just made. So what? If they don’t understand that you are doing business then were they truly your friend anyways? It could be said of your friend that they are selfish and maybe you don’t really need them around.
And sure you don’t have to be plugged in all the time. But you don’t have to be doing business all the time either. Mark doesn’t. He has a family he loves and spends time with them regularly. And you don’t just have to let a cell phone keep on ringing. How long does it take to pick up the phone, say something like “Can I call you back in an hour.” and then be done with it?
Don’t like the way business is done now days? That’s fine. From the dust you were created and to dust you shall return.

I think it’s a matter of what’s important. Tech has changed the culture. I don’t like that “bundled” into by TV/computer cable/cable phone line are all the whistles and bells on the phone. At home, I never use call waiting or forwarding or whatever. I NEVER put anyone on hold. It’s rude. If someone wants to talk with me, they can call back. I’ve chosen to be in charge of my technological life.
I’ve been at scores of meetings with parents regarding their kids. The whole time things beep, bop, squeek, play music, and vibrate. Now, what’s more important?
Even The Donald, for as driven as he is, put his kids ahead of business matters when they needed to talk with him.
It’s a matter of what/who is important.

Your argument is actually a signal that convergence is far from dead. I’ll argue this because you can still turn these things off, in time, such things will not be practical. When I came to IU for the first time, things such as email and the like were not all the necessary. When I returned to finish my degrees, life pivoted on it. Now while college life and operations are not the main indicies of life in the real world, it certainly serves as an omen. The point is that our marriage to the digital life is still in the honeymoon phase, and we will all let it continue because we demand ease and convenience in our personal and professional lives. Take comfort for now that you can turn things off still, because I guarantee you, that day is fleeting. If you don’t take the Sci-Fi warnings to heart, it could be argued that this segue into a digital life is what we all need so to speak, and in time, probably long past yours and my own, all this will pass, and the technology that exists will be way beyond the idea of digital, possibly something more organic in nature, but this is progress, something that we all fight, but all eventually submit to in one way or another…

I agree with what you are saying about needing to disconnect but I don’t think converged is or ever will be “over”. Now the new thing is Voice Over Internet Protocol or VoIP. Packetizing voice and data information alike and sending it over the same network, the same routers, the same firewalls, etc. In about 5 years this will be the new digital and there will be some new advance in our IT world. Wait until Nano technology has been harnessed in a form that 10 year olds can apply it to video games and there will be a hole generation of kids becoming young adults that are, in my mind, too intertwined with data and convergence. I am not going so far as to say chips inserted in peoples heads but we do attach wireless devices around our ears that transmit information seamlessly to a PDA or cell phone…how much further do we have to go before it is no longer just attached, but installed…?

While I do agree that convergance to the digital age has happened, it is not dead. Convergance is more than just converting analog to digital. It is the merging of one medium with another. It is using a wireless music bridge with is hooked upto your home theater to run through your wireless router to play your music from your computer on your home theater system. It is being able to view your pictures from last nights big party that are on your computer via your television. It is using the XBox 360 as a media center for your entertainment purposes.
Convergance is all around, and it will never end.

I’ve read a few comments where people talk about being with someone when they get a phone call and telling you to wait while they take it. I’m not a CEO or anything. I’m not an ‘important’ person. If you choose to take a call in the middle of a conversation with me it sends a message that your phone (I don’t care who’s calling) is more important than me at that particular moment. I’m not talking about when someone is expecting a phone call. I’m referring to people who ‘have’ to answer the phone no matter what.
There’s a happy balance with ALL digital technology. I often receive phone calls and don’t answer them. My phone is on, it rings and I completely ignore it. The same person may call back several times in a row, I ignore it until I want to look at it. This could be an hour, or two days. Digital technology enhances my life, not controls it!

I completely agree with you, it is part of the reason I decided to not have any internet connection or housephone in my home. When I leave work I choose to “disconnect” and spend time with my family. I still have my cell phone, but I have the choice to answer it, and I don’t answer it that often : )

I just chatted with my former academic advisor and she pointed this out – every new class that comes in to the Texas Academy of Math and Science happens to have more issues with patience. People have become so accostumed to googling for the answers that the idea of learning by actually thinking things through and working hard has almost become obsolete. They actually complain when the answers can’t be found at the click of a button! Sure, the digital world has contributed greatly to the world, but people are so caught up in it, they miss what they’re losing in the process.

I am upset when people call me at work or at school and they have this expectation for me to call them back ASAP. Or when people my cell phone 3 times in a row in case I was fumbling for my phone in my bag. No I wasn’t fumbling for it. I chose not to take the call. There is such an expectation these days to have the instant connection to another person, and if they don’t answer a text message, return an email, and the like, they flip out because they’re impatient and waiting for an answer. I know I’m sounding old here, but we used to get along just fine 10 years ago without all this fuss about digital this and digital that. (Ok I’m only 23 but I’m imagining what my grandfather would say).
But really, if we chose to disconnect, then people take offense to it, they see it as anti-social, passive agressive, etc.
I’d like to see what the sociologists say about the digital interactions we have with people and how it has affected their patience and the like.

Valid…but we can not forget that to be connected is a choice…we can still choose to only have regular ol meaningful flesh and blood human interaction for days, weeks even! We often think our online persona is a profound contribution when it’s really just fodder to others looking to kill time in their underwear…everyone should take some substantial time off…fewer people would notice you were gone from cyberspace than you might think…Even in the digital age, who knew my still “disconnected” dad’s advice would be so applicable: Don’t worry about what people think, they probably don’t.

Thanks for the great thoughts about the digital age. You’re right things have changed alot in the last few years, we’re all more connected than we ever were. I appreciate the ability to be connected and the ability to be more accessible to others. I’m not quite as connected as your are so I don’thave the “digital cabin fever” but I can see how some people can. I think the challenge that still exists is to develop digital technologies that don’t feel digital, they feel part of the every day, easy to use, of benefit to the user and almost invisible.

While I agree with everything you say, there is still something to be said for common courtesy. I have all the toys and tools and can’t imagine life without my digital connections. But the one thing that chaps my butt is being on the phone with someone and suddenly being told, “Oh, hold on, I have a call coming in” and then being put on hold. I don’t personally care if you have a call coming in, that’s what answering machines are for. When I get put on hold for someone to take another call I just assume I’m not that important to the person on the other end of the line, so I hang up.
