Right is its own defense

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. Laptop died in Miami and sitting in an internet cafe didnt appeal to me.

I have this saying that Right is its own Defense. I actually got it off a tshirt i bought about 20 years ago.

In this day and age, every one wants to categorize you and then make you defend yourself.

Im <fill in the blank> owner of the Dallas Mavericks. How can I be <fill in the blank> Why cant I be like <fill in the blank>

We are starting a website that focuses on uncovering corporate crime. I have every intention of trading on the information uncover, and disclosing exactly what i do. The ultimate transparency.
A journalism professor was quoted as “not being able to get his mind around it ” Others have criticized me for having a good idea but “ruining” it by trading on the information.

HDNet is talking to Dan Rather and we hope to do a deal where he produces a show that uncovers news. Information with a payoff. Some people have already decided that working with Dan alone defines positions we will take in our programming. Of course we have a 5 year history of news features already with World Report, but why let that get in the way.

For some reason the thousands of people send me emails and many others are writing stories about any or all of these things. Its as if they expect something to change. That they have a lock and key on what is right.

Well lets be clear. Right is its own defense. Im going to do what I think is right. Period end of story.

You may not like that i want the officiating in the NBA to get better. I think its the right thing to do.

You may not like that I will trade on information we uncover and then publish it. I think reporting what we find is better than not reporting it. If we can uncover fraud. Thats a good thing. That profiting on the information we find is the smart thing to do. It beats the hell out of trying to remake the site every year to maximize advertising or subscriptions. It changes the newsenomics, which need to be changed.

You may think you know what Dan Rather and HDNet will do together. But you dont. You have no idea. I will tell you that there wont be any corporate considerations. No earnings per share issues. No worries about advertisers and what they might think.

Right is its own defense.

  1. Mark,

Although I did like to see you come out blogging today about a “non-we got robbed article” such as the HDTV/Dan Rather bit, I can’t help but mention how much I would like to see the Mavs lose in Game 6. Especially since I started out pulling for them in Game 1. Please let me explain my transition. I started out rooting for the Mavs, being from Texas, I wanted to have the all new Mighty Texas Triangle for all other NBA teams to fear. Which other state can claim that they have three NBA champions as residents? I also wanted to see a great person/player/coach like Avery Johnson win a title which he deserves “eventually”. I even like you as an owner. I’d take you as an owner of any of my other sports teams any day, twice on Sunday. You have done an awesome job with what you started with. However, my view on the Mavs all started to change after the Game 2 victory when I heard you, the city, or whoever it was already planning a parade and had even mentioned a tentative date. So much for that one! Just be glad you still have a chance at all. Even that could be gone in less than 48 hours. How does a team or city for that matter go out and set a date for a parade when they haven’t even won a game on the road or even yet to play on the road? Was this the first time a team has been up 2-0 in the finals? Was this the first time a team down 0-2 has come back to tie the series? Just what would make the city of Dallas or you the owner go out and predict a series to be over after only 2 games of a best of 7 series? It astonishes me that you wouldn’t even think how bad that would look if what exactly has happened, occurred. Just another reason I hate Dallas sports and the City of Dallas. Nothing but a bunch of pompous arrogant assholes! GO HEAT! Finish off the crybabies so they can “fully” implant foot into mouth.

  2. The NBA is currently one notch above pressional boxing and two notches above The WWE. It’s commissioner is only a few notches above Don King, Bob Arum, and Vince McMahon.

As a fan, I’m tired of having to cope with critical games being decided by suspensions and biased officiating.

For me, it started years ago when several NY Knicks were suspended out of a chance at the finals for leaving the bench (a literal infraction of the rules) even though everyone with a functioning brain (other than perhaps Mr. Stern because he may not have one) knew their actions (coming on the court to observe while well clear of the action) were out of concern for a teammate.

If the idea is to punish players and franchises for aggressive actions why is that the fans are always the ones to suffer with them?

Why is that whole seasons are lost and potential championships are taken away practically every year?

There has to be a better way to solve these problems than destroying the sporting events for fans by putting teams at a huge disadvantage in critical games with suspensions!

Maybe it has to all be monetary. Maybe there is another solution, but destroying series after series is not the solution!

Second, every serious boxing fan in the world that has ever wagered a dollar knows that part of making an accurate odds line is determining how much of an advantage one boxer might have in the decision because of his promoter, the match being in a home town, or because of youth and future money generating ability vs. an aging fighter that the industry would rather see put out to pasture because his “usefulness” is over.

As horrendous as those politics are in as corrupt a sport as boxing, it certainly appears the NBA is using the WBA, WBC, and IBF as their model for officiating.

How much “home cooking” and biased officiating do we have to see before the fans realize they are watching a slightly better version of WWE Monday Night Raw.

    It’s ridiculous.

Honest mistakes are will be made.

Subjective differences of opinion will occur.

However, night after night of biased officiating is simply ridiculous.

The home team should not get most of the marginal calls – especially in the last few minutes. Superstars should not get the benefit of the doubt over the rest of the players.

The rules are the rules and they should be applied equally to all the players no matter who they are and where the game is being held.

For me it’s all about seeing a fair contest between the best players and teams and wanting to see who is truly the best. The NBA, its commissioner, and the officials make that impossible almost every year with all the suspensions, home cooked officiating, and utter disregard for the fans.

Find a way to punish the players without punishing the fans and cut out all the crap politics in the officiating or merge with the WWE!

  3. This game was so ridiculous it’s not funny! The refs gave the HEAT this game. The MAVS played a good game, but obviously not good enough. Everyone always says that if you want to be a Championship team, you gotta beat the refs too. I guess this comment has stood true. Go Mavs!!

  4. One more thing, don’t cry about the Heat shooting more free throws. Avery has been telling them ALL SERIES to TAKE THE BALL TO THE BASKET and STOP SHOOTING JUMPERS. The entire second half the Mavs shot nothing but jumpers. Harris was the only person that went to the rim (3 times to be exact) and was fouled on 1. Style of play dictates if you get fouled. Drive to the basket, get hit, you get a foul call. Shoot fade away jumpers or 2 dribbles and pull up for a jumper there’s no foul.

Stop crying and strap for Game 6 !!!

  5. This is complete bull****! The refs missed 4 calls last nite!!! 1.) There was a push-off by wade on griffin, on the shot that tied the game and sent it into overtime ( but that was a tough call so i cud let that 1 slide) 2.)the backcourt violation…You CAN”T be established in the frontcourt, touch the ball and then travel into the backcourt!!! That is a backcourt violation 3.) The push-off on terry….Terry was playing good defense on Wade, not allowing him to get by, but then i guess he jus trips over his own feet!? I think not, Wade extended his arm and pushed terry down, which is an offensive foul….4.) And finally, i have just 1 question that i would love to have answered… Who fouled wade on that last drive? Any answers….NO!! because he wasnt fouled!!! NO! touched him!!! He went between 2 maverick defenders and wasnt touched! He threw the basketball towards the basketball and missed, and the refs bailed him out, AGAIN!!! Like they have done time and time agian!, I’m not sayin that he’s never fouled, i’m jus sayin that he wasnt fouled then and the refsbasically gave the heat the game!!! ….And the bad thing is the mavs still shud have won!! They missed 3 free throws in overtime that would have given them the win easily!!! They have some right to be mad at the refs ( Mavs shot 25 FT to the heat 49) but they have to take some of the blame on theirselves…..I still think its kinda funny that when a certain ref (not sure exactly who it is) officiates a mavericks game, the mavs have won jus won 1 game out of like 15, thats not an exageration! Sumthin is wrong with that, but its not gonna be fixed because Stern hates Cuban. Thats why the mavs are gonna have to blow the heat out in the next 2 games in order to win this series, because as long as Stern is commisioner, the mavs wont win a close game against the Heat! The NBA is jus tryin to make another jordan out of Wade, its not his fault, he’s a good player, i like him, but i dont like the refs and the league helping him!

  7. First off, I am a HUGE Suns fan..with that being said Cuban is a good owner..Alot of people have the if he isn’t with me he’s against me attitude, and that’s not right. Cuban does alot for the league and his community so I give him props on that. In terms of the officiating being bad, I couldn’t agree more, but please be fair fans. I’ve heard people saying the refs have been against Dallas thru the whole playoffs, as if they are targeting just Dallas…come on…did you watch the Suns series??? In terms of special treatment, Dirk does get “calls” that only Super stars get, so don’t act as if he doesn’t get the same special treatment that players like Wade get…the entire officiating needs changed for the whole league, not just the ones that ref Dallas games!

Well yes, we are going back to Dallas for (2) games and we are going to do what Miami heat said we were suppose to do. Beat them!!!

    GOOOOOO DALLAS!!!!

  11. I USE to love the Mavericks, even when they sucked when I lived in the Dallas Area. I use to go to games and loved watching Jason Kidd pass the ball around and Fin slamming it down. But my have things changed …. I watched the Dallas/Phoenix matchup – Dallas was lucky that Amarie was out of commision and Kurt Thomas has not 100% nor was Raja. Throughout the whole series Dallas thought it was a cakewalk but when Phoenix applied the pressure – Dallas started to whine ?? Whine ?? Yes, why did they think they deserved the calls ? Dirk constantly has a constipated look on his face when the call doesn’t go his way. In one game he was trying to play defense and said that Raja stepped out of bounce where CLEARLY he was in by 3 feet. Complaining and whining will not get you anything.

Let’s also point out that Dallas has 3 people suspended now in this post-season and Avery’s wife assaulted a Phoenix fan. Stackhouses’ foul on Shaq was unwarranted and also in the Spurs series punching Finely …. NOT COOL at all. Where is all of this coming from … I think the Mavericks should look back at their humble beginnings and learn how to be humble instead of cocky and think that they deserve calls where they whine so much.

You Mr. Cuban – I use to like you as well but the more I see of you complaining and whining – I can see where this team got it’s persona. You do a GREAT job for the Mavericks turning them from bottom of the standings to a contender but lay off the complaining and be an owner. Let’s get this straight – you can never nor have the skill to play in the NBA, you might own the team but you won’t play in the NBA game. Let the professionals play and call the game.

I have seen calls that the Mavericks get when they shouldn’t and as soon as a ref ‘misses’ a call or gives the other team the SAME exact call – the fans and Mr. Cuban go nuts over it. Give me a break !!! Let’s remember the Phoenix series – Dirk would walk with the ball but as soon as Steve would do the same move – travel ?!?!? Before you go on TV and the papers and complain about the refs – why don’t you look at all of the videos that the Mavericks get away with the calls ??

I for one am turned off by the Mavericks and are routing for the Heat. A year ago – I would be routing for the Mavs but their heads are way too inflated and are not fun to watch. I will never return to Dallas to watch a Mavs game ever !!!

  19. I really can’t remember being this angry about losing a game before in my life. So much ridiculous garbage that still infuriates me.

    1) Suspension of Stackhouse’s for Game 5.

    2) 54-22 discrepancy in free throw shots in favor the Heat. Dwayne Wade set a record for free throws. You could not even breathe on the guy without a foul being called. Then the refs turn a blind eye when Daniels and Terry get fouled going to the basket. They call lots of fouls on the Mavs when getting physical on Shaq trying to deny him the ball, but no calls for Nowitzki being abused by Haslem.

    3) ‘Foul’ on Dirk(?!?) with 1.9 sec left in OT (This play should not have even happened because Dwayne Wade committed a back court violation on the inbounds play.)

    4) Granting the time out at the end of the game. Come on, its like Avery Johnson said, “Anybody that has been involved in the league for 20 + years (the refs) would know that they wanted the time out after the second shot.”

I can see why most people say they can’t stand the NBA. The inconsistencies are overwhelming. Might have to turn in my NBA fan card after this season.

Based on that alone, I’m really hoping the Mavs will pull this off and prove to everyone that they don’t need the refs on their side and they don’t need the NBA’s “superstars” to win. I hope they come in with all their anger and let it lose on those cocky arrogant players.
I’m so mad after watching that game it makes me not ever want to watch another NBA game if we lose. What’s the point if the NBA decides who gets to win?

What a crock. Are you drunk Mark!??! This blogger is still offended that Rather kronies attacked the blogosphere and their lack of editing and responsibility. What a crock. Who the hell were they to talk about lack of responsibility when the best explanation we got from Rather was, “I still believe the story to be true.” Oh and the bomb answer, “Well, we have people who verify document authenticity.” It speaks volumes that he believed the story even though the only evidence, THE LETTER, was almost certainly a crock, a fake, a fraud teatering on slander were it not protected by media exceptions. I have a better saying than Right is its own Defense. The Proof is in the Pudding. Or better yet, Stupid is as stupid does. My God Mark.

I agree with you 100%. It is frustrating to see what the NBA has done over the past 2 and a half days with this series. Vince McMahon, I mean David Stern, has gone way out of his way to make this not fun for anybody. I think all of America knows what is right and wrong in this series. I think they see a suspension of a player and a phantom call and wonder why. The Mavericks are right in this sense, and they don’t need to defend why they dropped three in Miami. Sure, they could have done certain things differently, but when Vince McMahon rears his ugly head in the NBA,everyone wants a sound bite or a defense as to what you think about him/officials. As for me, I like the Mr McMahon on the WWE better. At least he plays up the part and doesn’t pretend to be unbiased.

  29. We were confident(And cocky). We even changed hotels, becasue Miami was a big distraction. We were playing great. But we still lose. Why? Because the Refs weren’t with US. Miami is paying Stern, and the referees. They blew vicious air so our free throws won’t go in. They edited video caps to show Josh was asking for time outs. Then they make the referee say ‘Josh came to ask for time out twice and not once” on a gun point. Wade took superman shots, to move around like that. This shouldn’t be allowed in league. How can one breeze past 3 defenders, even though we push and shove him. I mean this shouldn’t be allowed, common. Free throws he made looked fishy, something Miami might have done..dunno what though. All in all, there was no way we could have lost it.

  35. Well I have to agree that the NBA officiating needs to get better. It seemed like the whole play-offs they were against us. I feel that the NBA wants Miami to win just becuase the NBA probably wouldn’t feel right handing the trophy to Cuban and the Mavs. It sounds stupid, but its the truth. Dwayne Wade gets all the calls, I mean All the Calls! Shaq does too. Wade reminds me of Michael Jordan in that he got what he wanted.

This whole playoff officiating has been a disgrace to the NBA and there are thousands of fans that know it too. Maybe they need to bring in College Refs or something that will make games even and not one sided. I am really disappointed that the officiating has been this bad. I don’t blame Mark Cuban one bit for acting the way he is, because I would do the same thing. I would walk right into David Sterns office and set him straight and give him an ear full. Then again, that would be probably be another reason why Stern wouldn’t want the Mavs to win. But Stern is happy as can be becasue its an extended series which brings more money in and the Mavs are down. He couldn’t be happier at this moment.

When there is fallout after being uncovered the person who did the uncovering usually has to deal with negatives and backlashing. Sometimes people even get vindictive. It is much easier to “Not rock the boat” or “it’s someone else’s job to reveal the info”. They know they are going to be scrutinized, judged and ridiculed by those that didn’t have the guts to step forward. These are the same people who secretly want everything to be fair and perfect, they bitch and complain but won’t step up to help. So good for you, it’s a dirty job-but at least your doing it.

As for the whole NBA officials issue, I think for now the team has to put that behind them, focus on winning the next two, and the officiating can be dealt with on the off season. Perhaps if enough of us get together and raise hell to the NBA they will do something about it.

Starting w/ the suspension of STACK, then on to Wade and the Heat camping out at the line all night, then repeated missed calls and then what shouldhavebeen a no-call on the final play…is the NBA officiating out to get the Mavs??

  53. Officials make mistakes in all sports. There isn’t any conspiracy. The bottom line is that the Mavericks couldn’t put the Heat away in game 3, got burried in game 4 and game 5 shouldn’t have come down to the last play. The Mavericks simply do not have what it takes to be champion. A true champion find a way to win.

  54. Mavs will win game 6, but don’t doubt it if you get screwed in 7.

I heard the final call last night was on Dirk. Dirk didn’t foul him. If anything it was Harris. I only saw the replay once, but it’s still beyond me how you can throw 3 defenders at a guy and he still finds a way to get the 2 pts. Is Wade the new Jordan?? No way in hell. He will never be nor will anyone else. But he’s already getting the same treatment as Michael did at 24 yrs old. It was the biggest free throw differential in NBA finals history. Sure, Wade is driving to the basket more than the mavs are. But why is that? Probably because 90% of the time he’s getting the foul called. Mavs drive to the basket no foul is called. So they have to settle with more jumpers rather than drives. If your a mavs fan don’t expect to win a game by one or two pts. Mavs will have to have at least a 5 to 7 pt lead going into the final minute to pull out the victory. If not something is bound to happen.

There is no conspiracy theory against Dallas, and the league is not trying to screw Cuban (I don’t think). The officials are absolutely terrible. They should get rid of these guys and just use the refs in the NCAA.
