Thanks to the folks at Danger and T-Mobile for getting me my new bestest gadget, the Sidekick II
I have been a long time user of Sidekick I, but II just kicks its ass.
The design is simpler, the phone is better, the camera works like a real camera and the email and web browser are faster than before. I love it.
To all you corporo types out there that like the Blackberry, you have no idea what productivity is like ’till you play with one of these bad-boys.
The keyboard is something that works for any fat fingered typist. The screen has colors and I don’t go blind staring at it, but my fave feature is the fact that I can store a ton of my email right on the device in different folders.
I live off of email. I check my email 20 x for every time I check voicemail. My productivity comes from being able to respond how and in as much depth to any of the more than 1k I get every day. The II, lets me do that anywhere. The keyboard is big enough thatI can type at almost desktop speeds.
It also allows me to use the email storage ability as a realtime tickler. Emails that I need to respond to get put into the Important folder and I’m off to work. If I fall behind, unlike other devices, where I have to resync, or go back to my main PC, the II stores 8mb of emails so as long as I’m not away too long, my work is there waiting for me.
It’s all about using my time where and how I want, and the II lets me do both.

i have just puchashed a sidekick 2 and i live in the uk.i love it its a fasion icon aswell as a serious busnise tool.only downside is camara quality compared to most phones out in the uk.over here the camaras on standerd phones are 1.3 mega pixel and up to 3.0 megapixel.the side kick is 0. something??? apart from theat im still learning how to use it and download other software

I has the sidekick color and liked it a lot. It got wet and I upgraded to the II. What a device! I’m using everything including calendar, to-do, notes..everything. I have a mail wizard that forwards Lotus Notes mail to my tmail account in real time allowing me to stay current with clients. This is just not for 20-somethings to play with–this is a corporate tool. I’d love to be in a beta program to enhance it even further. The biggest downside is t-mobile’s coverage map, which could be a lot better. I recently experienced some hardware problems and tmobile’s new policy of not shipping out a replacement until they have the old one in hand sucks. It took them over 10 days to get a replacement sidekick. Sure I had a loaner phone from the local tmobile store, but once you use a sidekick and have your life revolve around it, it is hard to just have a standard “phone”. GTG

Sidekick II is my first PDA type device. It is really good. After 6 months of use, I would still pick it over everything else. It is the type of device that you get better at using over time. I rarely use a pen anymore. I have figured out how to use the SK II to record almost anything. The SK’s ability to store stuff locally and then synch with the server behind the scenes so that I can later retrieve, view, add to, etc. on the web interface is a great help to organizing my thoughts, assignments and schedule.

I used to use a BlackBerry, been using a SideKick for almost 2 years now, the SK is the ultimate communications device. Now with OutLook Sync, it does everything (and more), that I need it to. I love being able to access my servers remotely even SSH into them if needed.

I beleive his original design from the beginning was everything that you mentioned, but where he got kudos was on integration. The plan was to outdue the typical PDA, cell phone, etc. by allowing his device to be ‘upgradable’ with downloadable software. This means you would never have to throw away your dated device just to gain new features of what’s latest and greatest. Not sure if he and the folks at “Danger” ever accomplished that but you can see his headstart has and will payoff.

To those who complain about lack of secure connectivity to corporate e-mail systems, I would reccomend doing a little reading. There is a swell encryption protocol that has been around for quite a few years called SSL. Many mailservers offer SSL encrypted mailbox serving via both POP3 and IMAP(my preference) which the sidekick ii does indeed support. Atleast the one on my desk which connects to my mailserver does. To those big corporate types who demand something to tie into notes or exchange, if you are talking about enough units, I would be willing to bet that T-Mobile/Danger, Inc. will appropriate a solution.
If you’re mailbox store doesn’t support either protocol with encryption I would reccomend beating the snot out of your IT guys until it does.
I have had lots of smart phones over the years. Having spent a few days with my sidekick2, they all seem borderline retarded. It might not work for everyone, but for volumes of e-mail, and quick communications, I haven’t found something better.

I was wondering if there are other download sites to download games, ringtones, and places to play games online, besides the tmobile site? Any help would be great. Blackberry BES Software release 4.0, slated for late October, will allow for wireless Contact/Memo/Task sync. This means no more need for cradling to desktop. Blackberry is a more evolving product over the long run.

Unfortunately, most of the readers from the above comments do not know the history on this particular product. I myself do not own one (yet) only because I knew that I wanted to wait for the upgraded, color display version. I actually read up on the Sidekick back a few years ago (before S1 was released) and its founder, and knew then the guy was a genious. He termed the product by the nickname “HIPTOP” then, which it still it may be referred to today. I beleive his original design from the beginning was everything that you mentioned, but where he got kudos was on integration. The plan was to outdue the typical PDA, cell phone, etc. by allowing his device to be ‘upgradable’ with downloadable software. This means you would never have to throw away your dated device just to gain new features of what’s latest and greatest. Not sure if he and the folks at “Danger” ever accomplished that but you can see his headstart has and will payoff. Especially with corporo types like you and me. Once the Sidekcick converges with IP, MPLS, SIP technology, the sky will be the limit (streaming video, etc). I’m going out to by one today. Can’t wait to see the show next week.

iPAQ h6315 which is supposed to have wifi capabilities… now thats a pretty kick butt device.. wish it was on another provider though.

Man.. alot of competition in this area. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages.
Personally. I have to have the functionality that is associated with pocket pcs.. i need excel, ppt’s, media player, word application etc.. OF all the carrier offers. I STILL havent really found a Pocket PC offered by any of the carriers that can truly utilize of my needs.. They may have all the afore mentioned things.. but show me one from a carrier that has wifi.. of course they wont have it.. it wouldnt make them money if they did.. So im still tied to “separate tools”.. a pocket pc.. and a phone..

Employee, I did not say that the blackberry did not have to sync, I said, “There is no necessity to sync at the desktop”. Also, the point that I was making is that there is a need in each infrastructure to secure the data that is passing through these devices and to be able to deploy and manage them effectively. You are concentrating on end-user, retail friendly features in comparing these products, which is not the way IT Departments, such as mine, qualify if a device is good to go within our system. Cameras and stuff like that are not what the average business user wants or cares about.
Also, while you quote the lack of sales for the IPAQ, that does not reflect against the Blackberry, which are selling in the hundred thousands.

I purchased my Sidekick in November and since that time I have had 5 hardware failures. The very first one only lasted 2 days. The current Sidekick that I have, has been around since March. Regardless of any issues I have had, I just don’t think there is another device out there that is so user-friendly and let’s face it, fun. It is always a conversational peice and since I am in the technology industry it adds a litte “kick” to my first impression. Our company also uses Nokia Access Mobilizer which converts the data to be viewable in any phone web browser better than the native formatting. NAM allows us to check our email, contacts, calendar, and utilize improved web browsing. As we have all experienced with web phones, not all websites are readable. That answers any limitations that the current device has. It isn’t push technology, though. You do have to log in to a secure web-site behind the firewall and I recommend 2-factor authentication of some sort like a token or key fob.
I cannot wait to get a Sidekick II, though. It looks a lot more streamlined and smaller. My phone might actually fit into my purse in the future.

i work for t mobile at frankford and marsh. The blackberry has to sync to get contacts, so ya it is necissary to to sync. The sidekick II doesnt have secured connection because the average danger user doesnt need it, why jack up the price for something you dont really need? Ya, like every device it has its short commings but danger takes a big leap ahead with this phone. I had the 270, blackberry,600 and IPAQ and the II passes them all. Yes the IPAQ does offer more connection types, but look at the size, you have to use the bluetooth headset just to keep your arm from falling off from holding it for so long. And the IPAQ no matter how badass it is, is grossly over priced, it does not switch to wi fi automaticly you have to activate it from your connection page. The camera quality leaves alot to look for (II is the first handheld with a flash for the camera). IPAQ is not moving as fast as t mobile predicted and they are baffled as to why. Well i’ll tell you right now why. Its not user friendly. Danger has done countless hours of trials to get thier programing user friendly. When im sitting for 90 minutes with a customer showing them how to work an ipaq i just want to point at the picture of the II and tell them to wait. I personally am getting it, full price…that tells you something when a rep is paying full price on a phone that i could get 60% off on if i waited 2 months.

This device does not hold a candle to the Blackberry in the eyes of the decision-makers. A secure backend and ease of management, security and administration is what is against this device, which is a retail consumer godsend yet an IT Department nightmare.
By the way, Blackberry has had message saving capability on it for years. There is no necessity to sync at the desktop, it is wireless.

Why would one need all of these gadgets. A laptop and cell phone with a camera aren’t enough? I don’t see why someone would need a palm pilot instead of just writing things down on peper which would be so much easier and less time consuming. A PDA, blackberry, sidekick I and II,what’s the point? Do you really need these?

I simply cannot wait for the Sidekick 2 to be released to the general public. Currently using the Sony Clie UX50, I’ve always felt that this unit would be the ideal gadget had it been integrated with a cell phone. A cellphone/pda that has a compact design and a highly usable QWERTY keyboard was nowhere to be found. The sidekick 2 should definitely vill that void.

Yes sidekick is sweet, ive got the first one, but blackberry has something corporate users need that sidekick doesnt readily provide: secure connections to back-office (encrypted email..).
As much as sidekick boosts productivity it’s not going to pass purchase departments requirements for corporate policies.
Other than that, my only gripe with the Sidekick I/II is that its not easily open to 3rd party developers. Unlike palm/windows/symbian et al smartphones, you can’t install 3rd party applications except for those provided straight from danger/tmobile. Wouldn’t it be sweet to use your sidekick as a universal remote, a gps, or millions of other uses that people innovate and want to provide?

I had T610. Traded in for blackberry. Traded that in for Treo 600. Now trading it in for the HP Ipaq 6315. (http://ionimbalance.blogspot.com/2004/08/that-time-of-month-again.html)
HP ipaq 6315 is a phone, does wifi and bluetooth and GPRS… all integrated. Come within a hotspot and switch to wifi from GPRS and get much higher speed than ever.
